Smoking...

When I was 18 I smoked a couple a week only on nights out. After about 6 months of that I was in town one afternoon by myself and had bought a pack to take one out of that night as I'd ran out.

Halfway down the main street, I took one out and lit it up. By the end of the street, I stopped and realised what I was doing. I then gave the pack and lighter to the next person I seen smoking and never touched one since.

I was one who thought 'i'll never get addicted' but then why bother taking that chance.
There is not one valid argument or reason to smoke and any reason someone gave has numerous counterarguments and alternatives.

I had to run the gauntlet passed the bingo hall last night after squash to get back to my car. I went to the other side of the road then crossed back over after passing them.

I'd be more concerned about breathing the exhaust fumes from cars and diesel trains to be quite honest!

Absolutely right on the button mate.

I bet he doesn't mind breathing in aerosol deodorants either.

Neither of those make my clothes smell plus I and other people benefit from them.

You can argue it all you like to try and justify it but it's a disgusting habit which is inconsiderate to other people.

Any adult that decides in this day and age it's a good decision to start smoking needs their head checked.

The thing with smoking is, it becomes an interval to everything. Just finished work, leaving the house in 10 minutes, the walk between pubs, about to go to bed. The list goes on and on.

This is EXACTLY what the habit comes to!

There is always a gap to fill and you will always find gaps.

Walking between the restaurant and pub when out for a nice meal. You will be that guy who lights a smoke for the 30 second walk...

3 hour train journey with 1 change over with 10 minutes to kill. You will go out your way to go out of the station for a smoke.

Finish dinner, better kill the taste with a desperately needed smoke.

Almost finished my pint, will have a smoke, buy new pint, have another smoke, tastes better...

Honestly mate, been there and done all of the above. It's so true. I'm so glad I don't smoke anymore, it's just disgusting.

Nicotine (or the lack of) stresses you out massively :D

OP, is the 12 in your name representative of your age? Mental age perhaps?

So very true.

OP, don't just start with 1 or 2 because you'll be doing 10-20 a day before you know it. I should know, I did the exact same thing with the exact same thinking

Hell im concerned about the fact that weekly joints have become a thing for me with friends. (it varys wildly, 2 weeks without smoking, or one weekend in the woods where we're smoking constantly.)

I know it's bad for me, but i'm not much one for blunts (occasionally but..)... that's as far as i stretch it, and as a non smoker even that is stupid. Don't even consider starting every day.

Let me guess, you could quit anytime, you just don't want to. As if that line hasn't been used a million times before...

What a glorious quote indeed.

Lol, I knew someone exactly like this, he was an apprentice, only 6 of us in the IT team, so he was like our little prodige to all of us. Until he started smoking and the amount of times I heard "I can quit, just don't want to".

Great.

I've never got the "relieves stress" argument, surely when you get addicted to the stuff then the withdrawal or "need" for a fix causes stress in itself? I guess that's part of the hold nicotine has over smokers.

I smoke between 20-30 a day and it ****es me off, ive tried plenty of times to quit but just cant muster the will power to last longer than a day or two.
Its like the other guys have said its a time killer, something to fill the gaps in the day, an they become more and more frequent.
There are situations when i can go without a smoke for ages, like when we are out in the wifes mx5, we dont smoke in it because we want to keep it nice but, there are situations when i smoke more, for example, when im out on the lash.
I try to be considerate to non smokers, i will stick to designated smoking areas if they are available, i wont smoke around kids and i wont smoke in other people cars or houses even if they smoke themselves.

OP if you start smoking now then you will be a bigger **** than me

Aye. Allan Carr described it as wearing shoes a few sizes too small so that when you take them off you feel better. Whilst nicotine does act as a relaxant on the body, the addiction itself and the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine heighten the feeling of stress beyond normal levels.

If I was going to start smoking I would have the e-cigs. But as I already smoke I have moved over to the e-cigs anyway!
