SMP Guide

don't worry SB - should have check the errors list :o but I'd thought that you'd already updated the guide

The WinSMP is working fine thought - and I can use it here at work too so I'd rather keep my folding to OS's that I know, And be happy with the output I receive.

With the batch of 2125's that the P4's keep getting anything is an improvement (bassed on 9-5 use I'm lucky to break 50ppd on these)

I do have a mostly updated version of the guide on file, but through a mixture of being busy and my webhosting FTP arsing up, I haven't had chance to upload it.

To be honest I think the guide is going to die a death pretty soon. I mean c'mon, given the choice of spending an afternoon installing Linux and SMP or spending 5 minutes installing WinSMP... I think I know what most people are going to choose :(

I think with the extra performance of the linux client at the moment, and the fact that for farming a linux farm is less expensive than a windows farm, that the guide will continue to come in useful :)

Dunc

Have to agree with dunc tbh, your work on this has and will continue to be very much needed/appreciated.

To be honest I shouldn't have killed VM/Ubuntu that quickly, as I really didn't give it a chance - just really fed up with it.
Was always trying to install late at night with out much sleep due to a poorly toddler in the next room - so not really surprised I got it wrong a few times. If all I need to do is add a flag to the command line text to make it work......I'll wait till the guide is complete and have another go.
(Glutton for punishment some might say :p ) I prefer martyr for the cause :D

My VM/ubuntu/SMP thingy has broken:(
I had to do a restart in windows so I shut down FaH with ctrl-c, shut down ubuntu, closed VMware and restarted windows. Now fah5 won't start crunching, anyone out there with any clues before I nuke the lot and reinstall. I was up to 85% so I don't really want to loose the work.

It gets fah5 and four copies of the core up in system monitor but no CPU time

It certainly shouldn't hurt to download a fresh copy of the client and overwriting the two files you get from the package - or you could try deleting the core so it gets a new one
Best to backup the whole directory first of course.

I had this happen once & had to add a line to the hosts file. See here

cruching my first linux smp unit now :D
pesky missing smp switch - could have been doing this weeks ago :p

Does the linux version crash out after each unit like the windows one.
and is their any thing I need to keep an eye on?

It doesn't crash out, but mine sometimes takes up to an hour to retrieve a new WU, i don't know why and this may be just my install. Sometimes it gets a new one instantly, other times there's been an hours gap where it sits there and does nothing.

By the way if you want fahmon for monitoring it i have a working compiled copy if someone wants to host it. (Im sure someone said they would host it somewhere recently.)

That's good news

I wouldn't say no - as I've just got a shortcut (sorry 'link') to the fahlog, but that's good enough for now as don't really have the time to play with Ubuntu currently as my little one is fast become mobile

Well its 700kb so i can just email it if anyone wants it.

Working version of famonh with SMP WU's, and i even fixed 2604 project displaying incorrectly :) compiled for ubuntu if that makes any difference, just stick your email here or something.

Delete all your other fahmon installs, (although this isn't neccessary at all, its less confusing) extract fahmonb5 into your home directory, open a terminal, type the following EXACTLY:

Code:
[me@mybox ~]$ cd ~
[me@mybox ~]$ cat > fahmon.sh << EOF
#!/bin/sh
cd ~/fahmonb5/src
./fahmon
EOF
press enter after you type 'EOF' and cat will close the file and you will be looking at a command prompt again. It is now fine to close the terminal window.

You will now see a link in your home directory called fahmon.sh, cut and paste this onto your desktop, if you double click it, it will open fahmon for you :)

Thanks again mikey
Really should learn at lease some linux commands, so I know what I'm typing instead of blindly following instructions.

Change directory (cd) and start programe (./) are the only one i know at present :o

Just to confirm, each line is a new command.

*off to do some research on commands so I can stop asking noobie questions*

Yeah although when you type CAT you actually start a small program inside the terminal thats allows you to type stuff until you tell it to stop, and then save it into a text document type file.

So with those instructions;
Code:
[me@mybox ~]$ cd ~
this takes you to your home directory

Code:
[me@mybox ~]$ cat > fahmon.sh << EOF
this starts the CAT program, calls the text file fahmon.sh and tells it to stop after 'EOF'

Code:
#!/bin/sh
cd ~/fahmonb5/src
./fahmon
EOF

notice the prompt doesnt appear whilst you are using CAT, once you ttype EOF and hit enter it terminates the CAt program, saves the file and returns you to the prompt.

Thanks (I'm starting to sound repetative :) )
That really helps - and just been to ubuntuclips.org and although most of the clip are about the graphical interface I'm begining to get my head round this :D

I was wondering why you'd 'forgoten' the prompt - so that CAT explains it pur-fectly - I'm sure if I was at home actually using it I'd pick this up quicker... old dog, new trick and all that ;)

I also get the feeling that there are 2 or 3 ways at doing everything (some more user friendly that others) And that typo's either mean it doesn't do anything (love that arrow key retype function) or does something quite different
