SMP Guide

After fighting to get fahmon working I have sort of given up in linux, but I have worked out how to get file sharing working between VM ubuntu and host XP.
You can use windows fahmon to keep an eye on your VM.
Find your folding folder in ubuntu in "places" at the top of the desktop, right click on the foldingathome folder (or whatever it's called) and select share, select windows (SMB). then in a terminal window type sudo smbpasswd -a username adding your username, then enter and you will get a prompt for a password.
back to windows and add a new client, browse for your newly shared folder and jobs a good 'un :)

Oopsie. My SMP client stalled and used 0% CPU for 12 hours until I spotted it. Rebooted the VM and it's back crunching agin.

Not a good day for WUage but fortunately it probably won't show in the stats.

Superb find dude!

It took a few days of intense googling to find out the passwd bit!
If you use Uncle Fungus's fahmon 2.1.5b.5 and his update thingy you get the PPD of the SMP units in your client list, most excellent Mr F:)

Oops... there is a 2.1.5b.6 now!
more info here

Yip I'm using 2.1.5b.6. No need for the SMP filen that Uncle Fungus created for the Windows SMP client either.

Why didn't you just ask...?
I don't know, none of the guides mentioned it and everyone else was trying to get it to work in Linux :o
Also I wanted to try to understand it myself rather than just cut and paste into a terminal.

Excellent guide.

My X2 4400+ was long overdue a format so I decided to dual boot with XP home and Ubuntu. Set up fine and used the guide to set up SMP.

Tried finstall first but following the directions in the guide installed 2 regular (504) Linux clients instead of SMP
Scrubbed that and followed the manual install instructions which worked beautifully. Also got FahMon 2.2.0 working with no problems.

Didn't realise the ATI driver instructions were on there - tried 3 different methods found on Google before I found one which worked (identical to the one in the guide).

Stan :)

Yup that should be finstall -smp but the corrected version hasn't been uploaded yet :o

Sounds like it did the job in the end though :)

Aaaahhhh, that'll be it.

Manual version worked like a charm and the FahMon installation was a breeze.

Good work SiriusB :)

Today I found the solution to my CSS woes so work on the site is carrying on. I still have all the errors noted down so they will all be corrected for when the site goes up.

Give it a few days and there will be a working version of the site.

It's up to you, but you may want to nab the detailed FahMon instructions that I've put on the official help page.

Could you copy and paste them into this thread? Alternatively you can just stick a link in here. If everything that needs to be done is in here, or linked to from here, I wont miss it.

Now, I was just wondering what people thought of the website? I am aware that the current background is distracting and that will be fixed. I am after some general feedback as I am sure you can all get an idea of the design I am going for. [It is based on the lovely folding sigs created a little while back].

My own thoughts are that maybe it could do with being a little wider, but until I have the content properly formatted I wont be able to decide for sure.

Most of the work and testing is done locally on my own machine so updates will only happen maybe once every few days [I have put VMWare to work in testing :D].

All opinions, comments and suggested will be taken in. If I decide to do anything about it is a different matter :p

So, lemme have it!

Here's the link to it: http://fahmon.silent-blade.org/index.php?n=Main.Installation

I think the only thing it doesn't cover is actually downloading and extracting the archives.

Oh yes, you could update your bunzip/tar combo to a single command instead of piping it from one to the other:

tar xjvf fahmon-2.2.0.src.tar.bz2

You also don't need to sudo scons, fahmon doesn't need root privileges to compile (in fact compiling anything as root is generally considered very bad), and scons doesn't require them to run either.

Edited to remove the # that appeared ;)

I should point out that very little of the SMP Guide's content is written by me. It is a compilation of all the stuff posted on the DC forum. Some stuff I have changed as I know better but you should forgive little things like using sudo in strange places... at least forgive me as it wasn't me who said it :p

Check the permissions for the foldingathome folder, they may have gone awry, which would cause the finstall scripts and fah to fail.
