Snow causing you any driving problems?

Didnt think this morning would be a problem but i have a sloped drive, it would move about a meter and then start to wheelspin pushing me towards my old dears mini.

End soloution , Full throttle in reverse spinning the wheels slowly heating the snow and moving backwards at about 1 MPH, dont think the neighbours were to pleased with the noise mind ;)

I spent today recovering things.

Managed to pull a Royal Mail lorry up a big hill as well as recover a long wheel base Merc Sprinter van from a valley.

Countless other cars too. Really good fun.

V8 Range Rover with snow tyres for the win. :)

Well the snow here never amounted to anything so I was able to go about my business :)

It does seem however that my cars got a snow mode activated in the very slightest of sleet. Flat out on the dual carriage way, speed slowly creeping to 65, very thoughtful reducing my engines power to about 36 and a half BHP. Either that or my cars just crap, can't seem to figure it out :o

A fair amount of snow in the midlands today - but not as bad as they'd predicted on the news. Maybe the council were better prepared this time round. Running with BFG TA KOs so grip wasnt a problem. School closures meant many people stayed at home to look after their kids, so the roads were pretty clear, even at 4pm.

Tommorrow will be more chaotic I suspect, with the icy roads. Still, its nice to get some snow at least once a year - else winter wouldnt seem like winter! Plus its always a good opportunity to take some scenic pics.

I also went to work sidewards today, was amusing getting traction at times but fun none the less. I even turned up at the office early to clear the snow in the car park :p

Bit of fun drifting (:)) on the local estates but main roads were slush so no problem really.

I got to work on time. I woke up 30 minutes earlier than I normally would, done my usual morning things, started the car up and set the heater to full blast.

Got my scraper thing out and removed all the snow from the roof, windows, mirrors, lights and the bonnet then went back inside for a bit while the car was warming up.

Left the house at 7:50 (start work at 8:30 which is 7-8 miles away), got to the bottom of my road to the T-junction to turn left, going 1-2mph, so very, very slow.

Braked gently for the junction and it slid a couple of feet (didn't overshoot) and it stalled...that was the only drama really.

Next bit was passing someone driving the wrong way down the one-way system, presumably a resident of that street....further down the road I got waved down by a man. So pulled over, well actually slid over to him to be told that there was a car blocking the bottom of the road, (not suprised really as it was extremely slippy), so just parked up at works secondary car park on the same road which was empty....i'll leave the rest for your imagination.

Oh and in my lunch break me and a colleage made a snow man in the car park...well actually it turned out to be a giant penis. :p

Would ESP be useless in snow? Mine went crazy trying to straighten me up but could not do a thing lol - Would it be bad to turn it off?

hardly any snow left up here, but lots of slush and ice, I just ended sideways nearly hitting a kirb just outside my street trying to turn at 5mph its crazy but o so fun :D

I spent most of this week in the sunny north thinking it would get to manc land by today,i left early this morning and their was still nowt, got past cheshire and it was all white, got closer to the west midlands and damn it started coming, down proper, brums getting hit quite hard at the mo, and a lot of the drivers are panicking, i suppose we just arent prepared for it, but common sense does seem to be going out the window.

Mind ABS saved me stacking the car to day, i have to get down a hit before i get home, only tapped the brakes and i was sliding towards oblivion sideways (well not quite oblivion, but a kia rio, which is close, honest).

I saw a a few cars in ditches on the A49 tho :( somany people just dont know how to drive in these conditions, either too fast or two slow, idiots.

It's snowed all day here in Wolverhampton. White over again and I'll be driving in it later. Might stop off at Sainsbury's car park later :D

Yeah i came through wolvo earlier and it was a mare, tbh the gritters cant keep up with the rate of snowfall at the mo, roads are really starting to get bad, and right on cue my heating has started to play up!

Well i left work early, just fitted a new car battery, took the car out for a spin and had loads of fun drifting round my housing estate.

Called it quits though, the snow is getting deeper and my F1's won't grip at all now!

More chaotic than yesterday - looks like the snow caught people unawares in these parts. Everywhere was gridlocked here. Going down a hill a beemer lost control and spun, spanning the lane with not enough room to make it out. THe neighbours forced it, 50 mins later we were moving again. Next hill and cars not getting enough traction again. Many abandoned on the roadside for collection when the conditions improve. Third hill - buses and numerous cars struggling to make it up the hill. Even with 4x4, conditions are still treacherous - take it easy everyone. Funny enough, it was similar back in 2004.

Now then, what are the key essentials to riding out the snow. Ah yes, Bread and Milk!

It's just taken me 4 hours 30 mins to get from Coleshill to Birmingham.

I'm now stranded at work. :(

oh noooo, it took my mom 2 and a half hours to get home when it normally takes 30 mins, and my dad was stuck in traffic for near 2 hours on mucklow's hill alone, unbelievable, even trying to get to tesco which is less than a mile away I hit loads of traffic, feel for you:(

This happened about 3 years ago - I got home at 11pm. Wouldn't mind but I only live 8 miles from the office.

I needed a pee for about 3 hours. :D

Birmingham gritters = useless.

Going to try get home in an hour or so. Found some bread & a can of beans.

I risked driving home from work, and probably shouldn't. Staffordshire is a nightmare at the moment, ended up avoiding the main roads as the A34 was at a standstill, had covered 1 mile in over an hour, so took to the side roads.

This was my downfall, thinking my problems were all due to having to go uphill, I was finding it increasingly hard to set off in the stop-start traffic when facing an incline (they were getting quite steep), this was with the driver aids off, as with them on the car kept cutting drive (which only made things worse). My problems soon worsened when I got to a downhill stretch that I hadn't even considered to be a problem. Driving at <2mph (dial not even registering speed), I had to be so uber ginger on the brake pedal as to avoid locking up completely. The hill steepened and I started to slide, released the brake to straighten up and started to gingerly brake to a halt, phew!

People in front of me were now pulling over, turning round, or finding carparks to stick their cars in, but a few of us kept going (stupidly). Came to a long downhill stretch which wasn't perfectly straight, and people were now taking turns to go down the hill (one person would get to the bottom, the next would begin etc etc) to the traffic lights at the base. People were now stacking their cars into the kerb, or the walls, or even one guy in a leon FR managed to stack his into the only low peice of kerb and end up on the large grass area between this road and one adjoining it at the traffic lights.

At this point I thought about just parking up and walking (still 15 miles from home) to anywhere I could get to. Nope, I went for it. Every braking action caused sliding, using the entire of the road, I was sliding down, trying to avoid the deserted cars. At one point I physically had to hit the kerb (less than 1mph at a guess, kerbing is minimal), the wheel that dug into the snow drift/kerb combination causing my car to pivot around, now sliding SIDEWAYS down the hill. The other front wheel dug in and I came to a halt.

Now, reversing uphill in the snow (so as to point me back down) is stupidly hard work, especially when the road is trying its best to emulate an ice rink. Finally straightened up and managed to get to the bottom by driving half on the pavement in order to use the soft fresh snow to give me some traction and control.

I am NEVER driving in that kind of snowfall again. The usual snowfall we get is fine, but this was something else. I had previously only seen snowfall like this when I have been skiing in the Alps!

EDIT: That was 25 miles in 3 and a half hours!
