So erm, first breakdown

The other thing I've plugged big leaks with is Chemical Metal which you should be able to get at any motor factor. I'd normally try and solder it, but if there's no access it's not always possible and a big wodge of CM is sufficient as a permanent repair in my experience.

Edit: though this is on cars where you can't just get radiators etc ;)
Would you solder a cars rad in a similar way to soldering up copper pipes with a blowtorch? Or would a high powered soldering iron be a better thing to use?

I've not needed to do this yet but I'm sure I may do at some point... My radiator is getting on for being 20 years old! :D

Yes, I did it with a MAP gas torch and plumbing flux and solder. It can be difficult to get the solder to stick because getting the fins on the rad nice and clean is difficult. Those toothbrush size wire brushes are handy for this.

Cheers, I'm pretty sure I have some of those small brushes along with the other tools so I guess if the worse does happen I can try soldering the rad if the worse does ever happen (touch wood)!

If that arch has rusted what had to be welded?

It looks like someone's just painted this anti-rust paint over the top of the rust and thats it.

It already looks like its rusting between the paint and the arch, it doesn't look good.
The arch obviously .

Specsavers, it's several small plates welded on the arch, coated with anti rust. There is no more rust (or only small remaining bits), it has been welded, then sanded with a metal brush, then coated with anti rust in preparation for the filler to make it even.

The arch consists of 2 metal plates, which were seperated because of the rust and had to be welded to re-attach. It's a known issue with Galants that water gets in from inside between the 2 plates because of insufficient isolation.

Now please tell me, where do you see rust ?

I suddenly feel so much better about my car.

This!

Going back a few posts (ive been away so sorry for being slow!), what the he'll are you on about the galant being more forgiving in handling terms when you make "mistakes"??? Who pushes cars like these to their limits!!!! Especially with borked front suspension. I've said it before, but I'm glad we don't share the same roads

I've got a boring cheap car and there's no satisfaction from pushing it at all. I've spent a lot of time driving fairly new company repmobiles and couldnt tell you much about the handling characteristics.... It's just not how normal people drive boring cars

Still, that car is an absolute heap, good purchase.

That is some bit of welding there, thats never going to look right.

By the time you pay to have that back 1/4 painted and blended in the door how much is that going to have cost you?

LOL yes please go there and stop trying to defend that bucket of rust you have purchased.

That IS NOT a well made job of repairing the rear arch.

I don't really care, as long as reasonably acceptable it is fine, someone did it for free for me which was needed to pass MOT, I don't really see the issue, it failed on the rusty arch, someone I know ( fair enough a beginner) welded it for me for free, it passed after...

It doesn't change the fact the car is more comfy and faster than my other car...

I'll keep defending it because it'll outrun most of the cars around here and it'll get me from a to be with more comfort and fun than the average golf on the road. I'd far rather have this than a brand new aygo or corsa, not to mention it cost me many times less, even a 1996 punto would cost me more to buy.

ps. since last time I posted here, I fixed the rad ( simply soldered a small fracture in one of the ribs) then secured it with the liquid rubber gasket thing, so far it works, I'm simply driving for a couple of weeks see if everything else is fine, and see what I'll do from there. Car is at home again, and probably next weekend if the weather works I'll try to fill & smooth out the arch, and spray it with a rattle can and then polish it with my rotary see if I can make the borders blend in, see if I can get it to ''reasonably'' acceptable standard, if I fail I'll get it corrected later, if it looks fine imo I'll leave it as it is after I'm done with it, I'm not anal about it... It's a car which the insurance valued at 2800€ while I bought it for 1000€, no big deal... As it is at the moment I'll have little trouble selling it from what I bought it for, even if I break it down to parts I'll easily get the money back, so far I've spent a grand total of 0€ on fixing it, simply used the stuff that is already available at home.

scrap - save - buy a vauxhall.

Right, scrap it for 50€ while someone has offered me 100 for just the brake calipers alone ( let alone the rest of the car), sod off . The wheels & tyres alone are worth 3x the scrap value. Don't you get that even with a half arsed job done by myself with some filling, sand paper and a rattle can, I can easily get rid of this for the buying price or more. An older 7th gen galant sells for 1k here, most poverty spec 2.0 8th gen galants sell for over 1400€.

The only Opel ( not vauxhaull here) I'd have is an omega, GT or insignia...

You fixed the rad, right, so as soon as you go for a long drive on a hot day the first thing to break (again) is going to be that rad. Leaving you stuck and broken down (again) and perhaps this time somewhere less convenient than outside a friends house.

Also regarding your statement that it'll outrun most cars here, I assume you mean distance and not speed? Or perhaps speed not distance? Either way is a very confusing statement, as it won't not by a long shot... Nice idea for thinking that though!

The arch DOES look ****. I don't see how you fail to see why that makes your car look like a complete and utter shed?

Stop talking about your Galant as if it is a speed demon with the luxury ride that one would expect from a Rolls Royce. We are talking about a car that cracks 60 in a WHOLE 8 seconds which in terms of being quick is a little bit pathetic. The Galant isn't an amazingly comfortable car either, it's just your average, uneventful 90s Jap saloon car...

You keep on saying "It's quicker and more comfortable than my old car" as if this is a massive achievement. Your last car was a 1.6 Volvo. Those weren't very big shoes to fill.

Oh, and Your patch job on the radiator is hilariously *****. You haven't "fixed it", you've bodged it to the point that it'll work for a while but will quite possibly fail leaving you stranded god knows where. FIT A NEW RADIATOR.

Actually, do us all a favour and just stop posting about your car. To be quite frank it's not particularly interesting or informative, and it actually boarders on frustrating how you can't seem to take onboard the opinion of anyone, despite the fact that it is clear to people who are thousands of miles away and have only seen the car on a computer screen that it is a complete and utter shed.

Once again I find myself agreeing with joshy. Can't believe that day would ever come...

Oh and the car doesn't just look like a shed, it IS a shed. I don't think id want that cluttering up my drive if someone gave it to me :(
