then what motivation does nvidia have to release (or even develop) another super high end card to replace the ultra at the top end?

this looks like its going to be bad news now for everyone, im really hoping ati can release a card that actually BEATS the ultra, not just comes close by the end of this year/early next year, so we can start to get nvidia off of their backsides and get those new cards shipped.

edit: also, is the 1gb 2900xt the last R600 card? will there be better/more refreshes at the top end?

also i just noticed my thread title may imply fanboy attitudes. id like to say right now i have no preference to ati or nvidia. i go for the best cards out, and they have been both ati and nv cards before.

Going by the previous naming system that Nvidia have employed the Ultra has always been the top card (aside from the rare ultra extremes etc) until the next revision e.g going from the 6800 series to 7x00 series or 7x00 to 7xx0 series etc.

I don't think that Nvidia will entirely rest on their laurels, they will probably continue with their development strategy as they would have otherwise, just they don't have the huge worry of ATI taking big chunks of the market so much so they can enjoy better profit margins.

6800 ultra extreme is the one I remember, rarer than defecations from a rocking horse but many people clocked their 6800ultras to the same speed (450/1200). There might have been other ultra extremes or equivalents but that is the first one that springs to mind. :)

I think a lot will depend upon how the mainstream HD2400/2600 does against the 8400/8500/8600 range. This and the lowend are where Nvidia and AMD/ATI will make there money, the amount they make on selling the top end is small compared to getting OEM deals for the mainstream and entry level. This is after all why the 7200 is out with the die shrink before the 8800 is die shrunk.

As both seem to be going for a modular system then the high end will arrive when Nvidia feel the need to change the mainstream to compete for the OEM deals.

Whils the high end makes the headlines joe bloggs who goes to pcworld or dell won't really care what is inside as long as it works. Same for the corporate buyers which is where the money is.

oh yeah i know, i think probably 70% of pc's dont even have graphics cards tbh, mostly onboard solutions.

think of all the schools and offices etc etc. i cant even picture them running 9500's/5200's tbh.

but yes i suppose it is good that the die shrinks are slowly making their way in.

The main reason why Intel is the biggest manufacturer of graphics chipsets in the world (in terms of volume) with their integrated chipsets.

Err, it's simple. Their motivation will be that they want to sell you newer, more powerful cards so they can make more money.

As time goes by, ultras will sell less and less and the price will have to drop. Then there's a gap at the 400-500 pound price bracket and nvidia can sell us a new card at that price bracket to make even more money.

They don't need Ati pushing the market along.

Why does this thread contain a hint of doom and gloom for Ati? For long enough we were all using Ati cards and praising them over Nvidia. Now a lot of us are using Nvidia because it's the best at the time. Next year we could well be back to Ati again *shrug*.

The bottom line is the R600 series can't match the G80. The GTX & Ultra is too much even for the 1GB 2900XT, the 7.6 drivers hasn't delivered the boost in performance as they promised, fixed a few issues but not enough, roll on next gen.

Why is everyone going on like ati are doomed? They had a bad release...big deal, last i checked intel amd and nvidia have all suffered from crappy products and are all still here.
