It's a shame they couldnt have done the AA resolve the normal way :o , not sure what benefits the way there doing now has apart from upping the AA level which is sometimes "free". If they had done it the traditional way it would have been the nail in the coffin for nvidia.

The rumour floating around is the msaa hardware on the chip was broken or they couldn't get it to work properly, so they had to fall back to using shaders for anti aliasing. Be interesting to see ati's next card in fsaa terms, if theyre still using shaders then it was prolly a bs rumour, if theyre back using proper msaa hardware then the above rumour would seem to have some truth to it.

I doubt the "chip" was broken, it's not actually a physical chip its just a unit in the core ;) , most likely they couldn't get it to work after a few respins. :(.

Never said it was a chip i said that the msaa hardware on the chip was broken. :p


Bloody cheeky of them to release it if that turns out to be the case, a graphics card that has a chip thats not fully functional. :eek:

Well if the unit that handles fsaa is on the core it should be referred to as "msaa hardware" (according to the armchair engineers at beyond 3d anyway). :o :D

Yeah, like the nvidia purevideo fiasco on the 6800 series. :/
 
Going back to the thread opener - it would be nice to see a little bit more push at the high end.

On one hand , I'm delighted my 8800gtx has held it's value so well for so long. Probably the best kit I ever bought.

On the other, the lack of competative pressure has led to very poor service in terms of drivers, and some of the worst pricing we've ever seen in the gfx card market.

Hopefully the next gen will be a little bit more interesting. As stated above, ATI need to get their thumb out. Nvidia on the other hand, need to be careful they don't get too lazy and comfortable, or they'll be caught on the hop again.

Finally, I'd like to see us the customers, and the IT media, give a big 2 fingers to all the marketing spin & fud we're being subjected to lately.
