So this is uni.....

I've been stunned by the fact my missus, who is a librian, has spent the last week doing inductions for the Uni students.

This involves teaching the students how to use a library. Now I know that standards are supposely dropping, but I thought they'd at least know how to loan a book.

So I guess if some of them can't do that then its not a wonder that some of them don't know what essays and reports are.

Anyone in their first year learnt anything yet? lol

I think most 1st year courses are pretty much levelling the playing field so everyone knows the basic stuff before they start doing the important things. I remember most of my first year modules being basic A level stuff.

That makes me think about SAS selection, where the SAS do not tell candidates where their headquarters are, or how to get there. On the basis that if the candidates can't work something that simple out for themselves, they are hardly special forces material.

I believe the same principle should apply to university students.

I never went to those, thou i did go to the law library one since researching law is a lot more complicated than learn to use OPAC and learn the alphabet/numbers system on the shelve.

Yes but the libraries probably have their own system for doing things. I've never needed to use the library though.

Second "day" of lessons.

Was cancelled yesterday, an hour today. Now have 2 full days off!
Back to lssons on friday. lol

Our Uni library has a pretty complicated system. There's computers which you can use to locate the book you want, but when you want to loan a book you have to use your swipe card, login with a touch screen computer, place your book on a mat (which probably uses RFID or something) to automatically read the books information then you continue going through the menus selecting how long you want to loan it for. Once done you're issued a receipt.

When you want to return it (automatic email reminders \o/) you do the same thing (swipe card, login) and a little hole in the wall unlocks for you to push the book through. Magic :D.

The first time I had to use it was slightly confusing :p.

Self loan machines? We got those. It's all on screen instructions. If you know how to use a mobile (which all Uni students are), then one of those is no obsticle.

An awful generalisation but leicester; are you suprised?

I'm glad to hear that the first year is a nice easing in process, it'll be good seen as the courses I look to do I only really have an interest yet no A level course for them. :)

1st year = non stop fun
2nd year = whoops i messed up a few more subjects than i did in the first year, hmm that wasnt as easy
3rd year = Ok i actually want a degree, i spose id better do some work!!

Enjoy your first year students, it COULD be one of the best times of your life so far :) (actually do the work on time too though, the 2nd and 3rd years are worth the minimal effort ;) )

No, he's joined the racism... because otherwise he wouldn't notice their colour, let alone care because he is a racist.

I've worked with non-whites and I can say that they're all smarter, nicer, taller, harder-working, and various other things that boost my sense of self satistfaction if I say them about people I think are inherently different from me... look how decent I am, becasue I can be socially generous to ethnic minorities...

I've just discovered there's only 2 of us on my Msc course. I'm still trying to figure out how it's financially viable for the place considering there's 4 lecturers teaching us :D

Well put that man.

2 1/2 weeks so far up here, including freshers, it's been awesome :)

8 hours of lectures and 4 tutorials per week - however, I'm doing Chinese, so many hours reading over stuff back in the flat is pretty much mandatory. Hours all slotted in quite nicely, tomorrow I'm done by 12 and get fridays off, 3 day weekend \o/
