So, this post office palaver then

Mackenzie is a grief-leech, suddenly hitching his horse to the SPM wagon, despite ignoring pleas to publish (and actively suppressed) their stories a decade ago.

@BloodInquiry are experiencing the same with the Terence Higgins Trust; who ignored haemophiliacs infected with AIDS and refused to acknowledge or offer any support, until roughly 3 years ago, when the bulk of the cover-up was made public.
Now they're sidling up to get involved with the Arms-Length Compensation Authority, because there's the potential for £Millions in consulting/advocacy fees.

Both scandals have very similar themes: particularly the supposed "arms length" bodies (the former P.O Head of Legal is in charge of settlement agreements for the SPM scheme). It's typical of government to force the victims' to have their compensation decided by their abusers.

Seems to me to be pretty standard "covering your backside" that goes on all the time in business. Just we are not aware of it.

I remember, many years ago, I helped to design a building control system for a banks computer centre. The computer was highly valued so was protected against fire with Halon gas, which of course is very dangerous to humans. In the event of a fire, the air conditioning had to be shut down to starve the fire, a siren set-off, and the people had thirty seconds to clear the area before the doors sealed and the halon was dumped. Unfortunately, thanks to a bug, the fire system didn't always shut off the air conditioning. This not only fed the fire, but pumped the halon around the offices.
That would have killed about three hundred people and was considered a serious problem. The building would obviously fail it's fire safety tests. To rectify that, the installation company sent in several people with walkie-talkies, so that when the fire officer triggered the alarms, they leapt from the shadows to switch off what was supposed to be switched off by the automated systems.
As far as I know, the building was left in that lethal state for three years.
This was the tip of the iceberg. The thing is that there are millions of pounds involved and companies are quite prepared to risk the lives of employees rather than lose that amount of money. I was told if I said anything it was all be denied and I would lose my job. I asked what would happen if the building caught fire and three hundred people died. I got told, "well, evidence would be destroyed in the fire".
That sort of thing happens all the time. This is what you get when there are penalties for failure.
When I watch the Post Office staff on TV in the enquiry. I smell the same BS as back then.

Very interesting watch on the inquiry now (currently on a break till 11am).

Jarnail Singh getting absolutely clowned by the counsel on what he did or did not know including a document he claimed he'd never seen yet was stored on his personal PC and printed it!

Singh deserves to go on his own trial for perjury at this point. Not helpful, refusing to answer contextual questions with anything suitable of substantial.

What a waste of time and money for this scum bag lying lawyer.

Sorry for double post, but my good god this Singh fella needs jail time.
He is clearly guilty in his actions resulting in people ending up in jail.
But now he refuses to answer any questions, concerns and does not remember a thing even with clear evidence pointing to him lying and engaging in a cover up.

What a disgusting individual, for the guy who walked in with a white turban from a Sikh background, he is a massive fraud and needs to see a jail cell.

Certainly be interesting. Curious as to why the recently leaked audio recordings have not been presented to these witnesses either. Alwen Lyons was all over them but no questions were put to her about them. Almost as if a level of (im)plausible deniability is being allowed to shield the executives.

Does anyone know which barrister is going to be questioning her? Jason Beer KC or Julian Blake?

Edit - looks like Jason Beer KC. -this should be good!

Banking crisis, Grenfell, blood scandal, COVID - I wonder which way the PO scandal will go in terms of consequence for those responsible?

Edit:

Vennells: ‘Individuals made mistakes’

Paula Vennells has said there was no conspiracy at the Post Office when she was chief executive, insisting instead that “individuals made mistakes”.

Addressing questions about the worst miscarriage of justice in British history, Ms Vennells said: “I have been disappointed particularly more recently listening to evidence at the inquiry where I think I have learned that people knew more than perhaps either they remembered at the time or I knew of at the time.
“I have no sense that there was any conspiracy at all. My sorrow in this is that I think that individuals, myself included, made mistakes, didn't see things, didn't hear things.”

Ms Vennells said she “may be wrong” but that “conspiracy feels too far-fetched”.
The lies, the incentives to prosecute, the dropping of the financial forensic company after revealing issues, the repeated lies Fujitsu couldn't remotely access, their legal team knowing they had no case but still went ahead, the legal team not divulging important evidence to the defence teams..........sure Paula.

Pleading ignorance all the way. I doubt there will ever be any serious consequences for any of these people. Large compensations will eventually be paid with clauses to ensure no criminal or civil cases are taken forward against any of these Herbert’s!

I think the most remarkable, and sadly reflective attitudes we see a lot these days, is that suspected crimes being committed were rapidly increasing from zero to the hundreds and nobody thought that something else might be going on!?

The people who are overseeing the system are that dumb that the checks and balances weren't triggered.

I think the line of command as to be looked at step by step. If each person didn't flag up a potential bigger issue then they should be convicted of at least dishonesty, maybe more.
