So today i started S.T.A.L.K.E.R for the first time

Yeah it can be altered by going into the game files but I suggest learning to pick and choose what you need on your ventures into the zone been able to carry 100kg+ gets very boring after awhile when you can carry a small army of guns and ammo with you. Later on a mod called Misery will test your Stalker skills to the limit.

I liked the weight limit - Autumn Aurora dropped it further (though not so much as Misery!). It makes you think about what to carry, specific load outs for different missions and stash management. Very much adds to the immersion.

Cheers,

For my first Stalker SOC playthough, would I want to use the Complete Mod or the Misery Mod?

The misery mod relates to the third game in the series, Call of Pripyat, not Shadow of Chernobyl. :)

You'll be fine with the complete mod. There's no right or wrong really, but all in all I would say it's a sensible choice among many others that are available. Enjoy. :)

Misery mod makes everything more difficult...hence the name! It also changes just about everything from the base game.

I wouldn't go down the Misery path until you have had a play through of either the original or with one of the mods that doesn't change the original a lot.

Cheers

Complete mod (for all three games). It barely changes the gameplay, but fixes lots of bugs, gives the graphics a little polish, and generally makes things better.

I would not reccommend this. Complete makes the game stupidly easy and is now outdated. If it's your first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. experience then play with ZRP which fixes most bugs, get comfortable with the game and try Autumn Aurora 2.1 which is a fantastic, highly polished mod.

I don't know about the other games, but I have played CoP with and without the complete mod and found no difference in the difficulty at all.

What about the merge mod mentioned earlier in the thread? How would that compare to Autumn aurora?

I have only ever played with the complete mod and fancy playing through COP again with a mod which will make the gfx look as good as possible, but not changing the gameplay too much.

Which merge mod bud? Sorry can't find the post but i've used Doom's Merge Mod on SHoC and it was fantastic, you basically pick a faction and do side missions, the whole zone is open to you and you start with relevant gear for said faction i.e Monolith have a Exoskeleton, top end guns.

With regards to CoP i'd reccommend the 'Absolute' mods which are basically graphical overhaul mods with some minor tweaks you can do, i'd personally not play vanilla CoP without them. If I remember right it's Absolute Nature & Absolute Textures though I can't link now as i'm at work.

This mod is a merge of work from some of the best modder's on the Stalker scene. The Merge mod is made up of a selection of mini-mods and other additions put on top of Atmosfear 3, Absolute Nature 3.1 (full version), OWR 2.1(extended version), Variation mod. Artifacts mod, Unreachable stash fix, Zone grenades(reward only), Bar music, Extra outfits and helmets. There's numerous tweaks such as how your now unlikely to find any high end weaponry in stashes(randomised content still) and the Underpass can be revisited,

It contains the mod you just mentioned absolute nature. Not sure if it has absolute textures as well.

Hopefully one of these mods will have fixed the game breaking bug that happened right at the end the last time I played it.

Well it looks like someone else is going to be reinstalling the first STALKER game this weekend if I can find the discs again. Failing that theres Steam :>

I never finished it and don't know why, it was a brilliant game.

I would say Shadow of Chernobyl is the best out of the 3. It got a great balance of in door and out door shooting and lots of things to do. The weakest to me is Clear Skys, first it buggy and i never really liked the faction approach as the system seem to be constantly asking you to defend or retake the same places.

If anyone new to the games i would say play all 3 without mods then look at moding them as things like the complete mod do radically change the game in places.

I always wanted to get into these have tried a few times but never spent much time with them! Just tried it again while the complete mod was downloading! Then installed that and its much better with it, visually at least and that head bobbing has gone :D may try and stick it out this time!

How does the merge mod compare with the complete mod?
Complete uses Atmosfear 2 and Absolute Nature 2 as a base, The merge Mod uses Atmosfear 3 and Absolute Nature 3 as a base, It also includes a larger selection of weapons, outfits, supplies plus new/cut mutants there's a big list of extra's. Complete mod for COP has proven to be buggy as well, where as the Merge mod appears to be 100% stable. Maybe I'm a bit bias though.

Complete with COP is a high risk proposition, I managed to get to the end with no bugs as well but the forums are full of people with problems and the problem is the bugs are the sort where if you get one you are buggered, You can't go to an older save you need to restart the game and hope it doesn't happen the second time, The bugs I'm talking about are in Pripyat, One is in a Kovalsky cut scene and I can't remember the other now but you do not know the bugs there until you reach it and if it is there you can not continue and complete the playthrough. As with all mods it is best to go onto there site if they have one (For Complete use Moddb) and read through the users posts.

Great, thanks. I'll try this mod and then maybe try Autumn aurora on another playthrough.
