So what have you found while fixing peoples computers?

To be fair to AtreuS, while as I said above I don't make a habit of snooping around hard drives for the sake of it (which I don't think AtreuS said he does either).... If two incredibly hot girls brought me a PC, and had that on the DESKTOP, with a folder called Sexy Stuff or whatever, I'm pretty sure I'd copy their home movie to my USB stick too :D Purely for backup purposes, obviously :p

What I WOULDN'T have accepted was the staff's behaviour. I'd have slapped them down like bitches for that - word of mouth to small business is everything. Having two customers tell half your town that you trawled their drive then followed them out of the shop wearing "I love lesbians" t-shirts wouldn't be the best advert imho. Having a "private party" with yourself over their home movie is one thing, embarrassing them publicly under the name of your business is another.

Whatever.

The place did close down a few years later actually.. 2002 or 2003 i think. And yes the place was run by clowns and that sort of behaviour was the norm sadly. It did get a bad rep in the end due to the boss selling dodgy gear at bowlers computer fair at the weekends. I wont name who it was but they were based in Fallowfield on the round-about near burger king. Anyone who knows the area will know who it was.
The shop area was staffed by 3 people and i was in returns with 2 others. There was a "build" section that employed about 15 lads and the pcs made there were sold in a large national catalog. The catalog company bought out the pc shop and in the end closed it down due to bad management, i left before i got bad and moved to another ( bigger ) reseller.

I happily accept i was immoral, i even accept it was childish but what i DO take exception to is being told i was acting illegally and more over that im lying and making it up for the hell of it. There WAS a legal document of acceptance that people signed, it was made by solicitors and i remember that we were allowed full access to the customers data. I remember scanning for virus/spyware ( or whatever you want to call it at the time ) with norton. Being told by people that im making it up is annoying as you can imagine.

I agree with both Atreus and BigStan but I don't think many posters are actually reading their posts correctly.

Things like that make it more believable.

LOL Those computer fairs wind me up. I went to one once, last year, and it was ridiculous. One seller wanted £20 for a stick of SECOND HAND ram (£10 new, delivered, online). I offered him the tenner as it was convenient to get it that day, and he told me to "P*** off and buy it online then". Obviously not desperate for business!

The stall across the hall had a HUGE three table display of pirate software. Vista, XP, Norton, NOD32, you name it. Vista was going for a fiver, BTW :p:rolleyes: I got my money back from the front door after telling them I wasn't paying entry to be abused by some sellers and offered stacks of pirate software by others.

Unfortunately, some of the other stalls were really decent - selling good hardware and some really nice cases and systems at decent prices. Shame they were overshadowed by the eejits.

I found my fiancee's stash of 'questionable material' a few years back when I had to back up loads of stuff due to an upcoming re-format. Sneaky lass had done the old windows/system32/offline/drivers/pci/bluelollipop/great wall of china trick too.

I once let my friend use my laptop while I was sleeping, I knew he was up to something dodgy, because everytime I enter the room he always quickly changed the screen, was obvious something was going on.

So I installed Key Loggers and software to record exactly what happens on the screen! low and behold once he went home I found loads of 'goodies' bear in mind he was told many times not to view porn from websites and if he does to use torrents as there generaly 'cleaner'.

He ignored all my wishes and I found out he was a 'rent boy' and a lot of other secrets  :o not to mention his passwords to a load of websites and chat conversations. Its his own fault he was warned not to do anything dodgy, I knew he was up to no good by his change in behaviour when I always entered the room.

Some things i found out include;

Pathological Liar
rent boy
no driving licence
not in the army
major problems with his pregnant girlfriend
no job
likes 'dogging'

and loads more ....

*yawn*

Aww someone doesnt agree with your viewpoint on a moral issue so now you have to start making personal attacks. How nice of you.

A statement of fact hardly constitutes a personal attack :)

These are more like personal attacks than anything I have said.

Nice attitude from a man of honour. i would say you are the saddo for making a daft statement like that.

So you can take your "holier than thou" attitude and reserve your place on that little cloud when you die. The rest of us are going to hell and will probably have a better time there than we would sat on the cloud next to you

Right.. so being a self rightous, condecending pompous saint makes you an man of honour? damn no chance for me then!

At least you've had the decency to admit that what you did was immoral but I still think you breached the contract with the customer by opening files which were obviously private and couldn't possibly have assisted you in checking the machine for problems.

You'd rather invade someones privacy than just block them from using the computer?

I wouldn't mind someone using my pc but i would be miffed if i got any malware/spyware/retarded active X thing installed while they looked for porn.

M right to privacy outweighs some nosey "techs" nonexistent "right" to go roaming through my personal files be they porn or my business documents.

I am with BigStan 100% on this one.

If you have been tipped off and have the legal right to be looking for any files needed to help file a case then so be it otherwise STFU and keep your nose out of my business.

No porn (I stream it from ....tube) on my computer but plenty of important documents that I don't want anybody looking at.

+1 I'm with these guys. 'A man's private life his is business and no one else's'.
The word "private" says it all. Its an abuse of trust. Rather like a shrink posting stories about their clients on an internet forum. Breach of trust and responsability. Only if an explicit agreement is made to give the techy the right/permission for full acess is this not wrong.

I have no pron on any of my computers  and have nothing to hide. It still is a worry when you give your pc over to some sweaty nerd to then spend the next 24hours franticly trying to find your porn or pics of whatever. Then he says 'it's working fine... no problem' and you pay £30 for the privilege of it not being fixed and someone trying to find personal details. Online fraud? getting personal details is surely not right and details includes pictures or any information linked to the person which you, the troll fixing, have no reason whatsoever to be looking for.

*you is indirect in this place.*

/rant.

But, some of the stories are kinda funny tho :D

invade his privacy???? its my computer/network, and i m responsible if anything happens. he was told not to do anything dodgy, especially porn, he said i just wannt play ccs and check my email, i thought ok, and went to sleep as i wasnt feeling too well.

Then i checked the software to see if it was genuine, i knew something wasnt right as before i went to sleep everytime i come in the same room, he was fighting to close windows! i m a student myself, i know the the behaviour of someone trying to hide something. :)

I had a mates Laptop here a few years ago, was doing the usual av/spyware/malware checks, it was literally plastered with everything but kitchen sink, and one of the files in queestion was in his my pcis folder in my docs.

Went in there, found the offending file and then saw pics of his Mrs. doing things with a cucumber. To say the least I went bright red, and secondly because I find it hard to look his Mrs. in the eye now.

I've never gone looking for stuff on people's PC's, it's like reading your sisters diary, you just don't do it.
