So what have you found while fixing peoples computers?

If I instructed somebody specifically not to use my PC for certain things then their arse will be mine and to hell with ethics.

Kind of agree.

If he had not informed the user he was being monitored, or it was on the users OWN pc, I would say that is wrong.

But - since its the users own PC, he informed the guy "you will be monitored" he basically told the guy he would check the router logs and so on, to me its not a big deal.

To me, its like saying to someone you have a camera in a room, you leave and then they start doing something questionable. (I admit though, I just skimmed through the posts though, so I may be missing something more deeper).

As for my own "finds" not really anything truthfully, worse was a few porn cookies that spybot found once or twice.

Someone I know did give me his old PC so I could turn it in to a server, I promptly turned it on, to see if it worked, saw it booted windows then formatted it straight away without even using it. Still, he has been a family friend (to even my parents) before I was even born, so pretty damn sure nothing untoward is going to be on his PC, and what people have on their PC don't really bother me to much :)
 
More stories less debate. Perhaps take the ethical debate to Speaker's Corner as you'll be able to debate more freely etc imo. Also it's going a bit OT from what the thread title first suggested.

Had to fix my dad's PC once, back in the days of Windows 98 so was riddled with random viruses and such.
Anyway, lots of the icons resembled .txt files or something click on one to find... recorded emails between my dad and my mom of the more explicit nature.

Last year i had to fix my junkie dyke cousins PC. My aunt picked it up from her daughters place and brought it to me, "It's making a funny noise and it won't turn on"

Tried to start it up and screen wasn't turning on, so i opened it up to have a check.

Enough dust and cobwebs to block a vacuum cleaner.
A video card that was fully out of it's slot and held in by the retaining screw (how the * did it get out? :confused: )
A second hardrive, not screwed down, not plugged in.
A 7" single (in it's sleeve) huh ?
A half brick, i **** you not.

Removed the vga card, refitted, machine started up fine, quick automated malware & virus scan and they had it back.
Damned if i'm going hunting for fun stuff, too dangerous, my cousin isn't all that and her GF is an absolute moose.

No swearing.

That's a rubbish argument. Whether what he did was right or wrong has no connection to you snooping into his private conversations and the state of his relationship etc, other than an attempt to justify why you needlessly spied on him. It was unethical, as you admit, and is a greater crime than looking at porn when told not to. That's not to say what he did was okay, but what you did wasn't relevant to your apparent security concerns and was a far greater breach of trust.

As for people saying that your monitoring was fine since you told him beforehand;- I doubt you told him you put a key-logger and surveillance program to read what he was saying.

I wasn't excusing him or saying that what he did was okay (because he clearly went behind your back and broke your trust), just that your response to that had nothing to do with the security of your computer, and more to do with revenge.

Anyhow, I'm a bit tired of going over this again and again.
 
After reading this whole thread through it just seems like we've opened up a very potent can of worms.

Spying/monitoring/snooping whatever you want to call it is totally wrong, I don't agree with those actions, yes I'd be pretty mad that if I told someone not to do xy and z on my PC then went against my wishes and did that I'd just not let them use it again and that would be the end of it, I might say sorry but I can't trust you to use my equioment in the way I instructed you to so you won't be able to use it again.

People always do the reverse of what you ask them to.

Finding stuff on the windows desktop thats pretty obvious when your working on a PC, ok fine, it's not exactly snooping as such, well ok it is but sometimes thats where people put things and forget that it's there (such as a downloaded file they want you to back, you've no choice then)

But snooping and looking to see people's private files is like opening someone's post.

Now could a don close this thread please ?

Well if i didnt monitor him, how would i know if he had or hadnt gone on porn.

Why is he having a private conversations on a laptop that he is knows is NOT PRIVATE and IS being monitored, that was his choice! not mine. if somebody has sex in a room that is being video recorded, you cant then turn around and go omfg invasion of privacy. its your own god-damn fault.

I dont know why ethics come into this, its got nothing to do with ethics, i made rules/polices that he should have followed, i put in measures to ensure that those polices was followed, they wernt and he was caught, i.e. its against the law to speed ... omFg Speed Cameras invasion of PRIVACY well, dont speed and dont get your privacy invaded isnt it very simple.
