So, what's Coventry like?

I made my university decision recently, and chose coventry as my number 1. (For automotive design it has the best name)
I'd only been down for a couple of days and as a result didn't see much...

What is the city like? Is it nice? Are the people generally alright?

Rough? I'm from a smallish town and so don't know what to expect!

What's the night life like? Many clubs? Specifically rock stuff...?

Errrr, and anything else I should know? I'm kinda worried now haha...

Cheers,
Ash

Coventry's all right... not great. Decent night life (well, better than any of the small towns around it), and has it's dodgy areas like any city. Nice enough center, and I've never had any trouble. Mind you, I rarely speak to anyone there anyway... everyone seems quite withdrawn.

[edit]See.

cov is alrightish.

city is a bit of a **** hole (think grey demoralising concrete, iffy areas too- hillfields, spon end, canley etc are worth avoiding on the whole), not had much trouble there though but have seen a few fights etc.

rough- i'd say yeah. As long as you're fairly streetwise you'll be fine though tbh.

Clubs- colusseum (in hillfields :/) is good on a thursday night, the scream pub (phoenix) has some rock nights, the jailhouse puts on live bands too and you're not far from leamington spa for venues such as robbens well pub (some good live gigs there) and other stuff.

edit- also brum is only £2.50 or so return from cov on the train for live gigs in the academy/irish centre and shopping etc. Also london can be doable for gigs.

The Colly is a complete dive that should have been closed down ages ago. It's filled with drug dealers, 15 year old girls and drunken chavs. The Phoenix is alright though.

A5H - the engineering lecturers here in Cov are pretty good, but do be prepared for a reasonable amount of bull**** from Uni management. It's actually a half-decent uni, let down by not having the funds other places do and having idiots in charge.

The city has it's rough spots, and has quite a high Chav:Human being ratio, but I've been worse places (London springs to mind....). You got living arrangements planned yet? I lived in Priory Hall for two years, then moved to Singer Halls for a year before I moved to where I am now (Barras Lane in Coundon). I wouldn't recommend Priory - only stayed there as I'd made some good friends there, and we were all too lazy to find somewhere else at that point! We moved out of there as a group into a block in Singer.

I did a sound engineering course at coventry. I found it to be reeeealy depressing. So did the locals (lecturers who lived in coventry).
Not my thing at all.

Colly is good last I checked, it depends what night you go on. If you go with a group of mates to the rock night during the week (can't remember what day) it's a good laugh, when I was there bottles of Fosters were £1, a good night was always had by all.

Covs great! Coliseum, Ikon, the Su....Dogma, if you're a bit more upmarket. Never had any trouble there, good cafs an Kebab places too. Nice in the centre too really :)

I live in Earlsdon in coventry

Its a pretty good area, im a stones throw away from Greggs/Weatherspoons

Chav wise we see a lot, they sometimes stand outside our house having loud arguments.

We havent had any trouble yet though.

I came close a few weeks ago,

I was at the union (warwick uni), and it was pretty crap... so i went home at about 12:30... arrived at my stop at about 12:45.

I start my usual walk home, well i usually jog home but i had a Kebab in hand, so i wanted to enjoy it.

Then i hear this engine behind me following me slowly down the wrong way of a one way street. So i straight away think im going to get jumped/bundled into a car.

I get my keys ready and was considering going to a random house and pretending i lived there to see if they drive past. THen i thought... nah i'll brave it... so i continued walking.

Then they said "mate...can we have a quick chat, we're police officers".

Now, this is a dodgy looking ford mondeo, with 3 late 20 year old chav looking people in it, they didnt show ID straight way so i said "no sorry" and continued walking.

They followed me again so i pegged it home. Decided to call 999, incase they were fake police officers.

About 10 minutes later we get a knock at the door...

Turns out they were the police :)

:( Damn...
It has the best reputation in the country for car design. One of the best in the world... I seriously hope I'm not disappointed :(

Cheers guys!

The Uni itself is great for engineering courses, and for the 'pretty pictures' mob in Transport Design. I wouldn't have thought you'd end up too disappointed. As for the city itself - well, I'm pretty much certain that I'm stopping here now, can't see myself moving anywhere else unless a damn good job offer comes in. After making the friends that I did, and doing the stuff that I've done, I'm glad that I got in here rather than my second choice.

Cool. Singer has many advantages - it's near the City centre, it's only a 5 minute walk to the SU/Uni, and it has student parking spaces. One disadvantage - it's fairly close to the warzone that is Hillfields, but there hasn't been a serious explosion in ages :p

Oh man :(

Do I have to walk through there to get to the uni?
When I was there, loads of students were walking about with their iPods out so I assumed it couldn't be that rough...
Oh well, I'm sure I'll be alright... People always think teesside is rough I guess, but I've always been alright. So maybes its the same...

Only been to Coventry twice when newcastle played them. The placed looked like a **** hole, not sure what its like to live there tho.

Coventry's not bad, as others have said its got a lot of chavs, as far as rock clubs go there isnt much choice, theres the Phoenix which is alright aswell as the Dog & Trumpet, try to stay away from Hillfields.

Nope. Singer to Uni is a pretty safe walk. One of the nice things about the city - pretty much anywhere is within walkable distance.
