I've obviously been to the transport museum as its free and in the nicest place in town but I've not seen any aviation places, and today I was discussing with my housemate about the lack of any decent record shops.

Spinadisc cost me a hell of a lot of money at uni...

CD collection went from - 30 or so to ~1200

I want to leave coventry as I am getting sick of it and I don't enjoy my course (computer science). So far I've not been mugged/robbed/burgled and my car hasn't been broken into (all surprises!). However, I know someone thats been mugged, I've seen only 1 fight (seen many in weymouth), 3 cars got broken into on the street I live on atm - one was my mates - also a few years ago I heard of mates-mates getting their homes broken into. Its probably the same as any other town really.

Out house got broken into - while someone was in it!!! They were upstairs and someone broke in - nicked the video and 32" tv and buggered off...

Hillfields sucks bad but if you smoke there is a cheap cigerette shop - I don't smoke though. The singer hall area of hillfields is ok, its just when you walk towards the tower blocks it starts to get dodgy. I used to live in a student house just outside the singer 'compound' and witnessed no crime!

Hillfields is good if you're into ladies of the night...other than that I wouldn't go there if I could avoid.

Thats the halls where my now other half lived at coventry. *I just have to add - my other half is not, and has never been a lady of the night...ok?*

TBH - Priory hall is probably the best bet - on the steps of the city centre and within stumbling distance of 90% of the various buildings. :D

Rock clubs wise... Not sure if the Jailhouse has been mentioned, lots of live acts play there and it has Red Stripe on tap - I've not been there much but I did meet a guy from The Specials there.

Lopez- not sure that its a terminal... more of a barn.

Also, I had no idea there were quite so many Ocukers that are around cov.

The car design course is very highly regarded, I think they must get most of the funding for the uni. Went to the degree show (where they all show their models) last year and the quality of work is amazing. Its definatly a course you have to be dedicated to if you want to do well.

The car design course has have lots of various sponsors - including Jaguar, Aston Martin and Lotus... It's always a superb show.

It's a fabulous course tbh.

Me on the other hand - did 2 years - left and went into motorsport. :D

Someone recently died outside singer hall, he did a trick on his bike or something and cracked his head open and died there and then - Dont ask me why I told you :/

Generally; it sucks. Lots of french people go to the uni and the resources there are really good. They got something like £13m for a library and computers theyre top notch. Some teachers are ok, others are stupid and lazy. It deserves more credit then it gets (the uni). My overall opinion is it sucks

I had the worst 1 1/2 years in Coventry at Uni (before I dropped out)

I went there without seeing the place first, what a depressing, grey overcast city.

I swear as soon as you enter the ring road the skies grey over....

I will always remember walking back from the gym past singer halls and hookers standing around...

If your not going for the Engineering then I wouldnt bother, bear in mind this was 8 years ago but I live nearby in Leamington Spa (a world away from Coventry) which is a great place comparatively.

On the plus side they have redone the shopping areas, but I still get depressed even going there for half a day.

Anyway, hope this makes you feel better ( :D ) but I couldnt be paid enough to live there again.

My god, what a depressing lot half of you are!

I goto warwick uni and I lived in leamington spa, and now coventry ... Coventry is far better.

Much cheaper, more choice - never had any problems myself although my mate in a group of 5 got jumped by some chavs last year, as said, as long as you're street wise you'll be fine.

Ikon's just had a name-change with Diva having a total remake - they're now known as Ignite and Lava - a really top night on a wednesday (thou not much rock), i live just round the corner from the jailhouse and that has some great live rock bands quite often! As others have said, steer clear of Hillfields (except the Singer Hall compound - really pleasant!).
Just dont take it all to heart and you'll be fine, if you end up not liking it that much then remember you're only there for a few years of fun (and little bit of work...) then you're "set for life" (whether that is true or not is a completely different thread!) with ya degree.

As others have said, the people you meet and mix with will be the most important aspect of your university days so make an effort over the first term and you'll be sorted.

You haven't seen me defend a town until someone starts bad-mouthing Burton-on-Trent. Then I start to get a little bit vocal :)

Theres a lava and ignite in boro (Middlesbrough). It looks nice as but is full of chavs and drugs... Strangely they sent me a birthday card and some vouchers... No idea how they knew when my birthday was and my adress etc :|

Coventry's full of Chav's and arrogant students tbh. Ikon is about the best place and thats a hole.Students seem to enjoy themselves at night, creating havok and leaving spew everywhere. Not that the locals mind.

Good luck in your course and make sure your well insured.

My mate is in his final year of Automotive design at Coventry, its a very competitive course from the stories he tells me, lots of foreign students. Very hard to get good grades as well.

However...he does says its fantastic in the very next breath and the stuff he has learnt and done is pretty phenomenal.

As for Coventry itself, its utter utter rubbish, of all the City's around the world I have been to it comes right in at the very bottom I am afraid. So grey, so boring...the rut of the Midlands. Been there maybe 3/4 times.

Hope thats not put you off! But you've got to be brutally honest.

I can sum up coventry as I used to work there and know more or less all the areas.

In general Coventry is not a nice place at all, areas like hillfields, fosehill(sp) Tile Hill and bell green should be avoided at all costs. There are a lot of chavs living in and around the Walsgrave Road area too. Im sure it has nice areas but I have yet to find one. The city centre is not a bad place just the outskirts that are the problem. My advice to anyone thinking of moving there is simple..dont unless you are from a background where you can look after yourself.
This is just my opinion.

I was in coventry at the weekend on holiday (barge holiday from a base up near Rugby)... didn't really see much of the city - but went ice skating at a big place and the actual town seemed pretty nice (Was a monday so quiet anyway)... We had a well dodgy taxi man :p ... was telling us all about the local red light district, and the amount of stabbings and stuff. lol

Rugby (Considering I thought it was pretty tidy!) is apparantly murder central :s ... taxi man told us loads (we were moored in a dead rural part of the canal in rugby as well :o) ... of stories, and we ended up going in a bar and the newspaper in there was full of deaths lol

so am not helpful really :p

A LOT of friends of mine (around 20?) went to Warwick and lived in Coventry for part of their degrees. They all got suicidally depressed.

It had the crap bombed out of it during WW2, hence the rapidly constructed eyesores around now. But, they are slowly restoring it now.
