Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

So will the 6 core AMD will outperform i7?

Surely almost any 6 core will be faster than a 4 core, in a similar way to any 4 core is going to be faster than any 2 core, be it AMD or intel...

Tis all very well have 6 migrant workers instead of 4, but if the 4 migrant workers work faster than the 6, and you can only divide the work up by 4, then the 4 workers will get the work done faster.

EDIT: Maybe migrant workers was a bit too non PC... They do work hard an efficiently though. :P

But in games it will make no difference so might as well buy an X2:p

Well thats what you have all been telling me in that other thread.:D

Yes in games your quite right it will make no difference...

I shall buy one for e-peen

but I reckon at sub £200 (reportedly) its a steal for anyone wanting to do multi-thread work

well is some rumour / speculation going around that because the CPU is "power gated" (the technical term for 'turbo' mode) it will also be using something called 'power aware clock grids'.. both were features that were meant to be first seen in the new 32nm Llano (AMD's APU, due for release later this year).. as I understand should mean that these new X6 are very power efficient as the CPU practically shuts down to 1 under-clocked core when grunt isn't required and then provide increased power to individual cores in turbo mode..

I doubt those rumours are true, although it would be interesting if the X6s have this feature. Really, I'm only expecting them to be like the X4s, except with two extra cores.

so 6 cores AMD will be better than 4 cores of i7 with HT making 8 threads running at 4ghz?

HT does NOT make it 8 threads at 4GHz ... HT uses otherwise wasted cycles to run something meaningful (say another thread) - the more optimised the OS and the program, the less help HT is.

I think AMD have already confirmed they are power gated?

Interestingly there will be a X4 version "Zosma" , (which may be unlock-able to an X6) of the Thuban X6 CPU rated at 95w TDP if memory serves correctly.

We'll see

Overkill for most no?

If they are sub £200 then that's a lot of bang for buck... i7 is overkill for most but people still buy them

Still a nice little upgrade if you need / want the power and have a AM3 board... for serious overclocking I am guessing you may need 8+2 Phase PWM if you are on a 790FX chipset (I believe most of the Asus / Gigabyte are).. most of the new 890 are 8+2

Like anything else - if these are released at the right price they will be worth buying.

Lets face it - if Intel were showing the sort of competition they did in the netburst days these things would cost a fortune. As there'll be some competition, I expect these are going to be relatively affordable.
