So, you want to keep a pet tarantula?

As a person who suffers from arachnophobia, all i shall say is MINGING.

I looked @ the pics and vids and now I am so cold and i have goosebumps all over my body. Spiders are evil :(

What a quality thread ! I usually wander outside for a smoke every hour n' a half - I've spent two and half hours sat reading this (so it's saved at least 5 minutes of my life which I would have lost by puffing on a cancer stick) !! Really interesting stuff.

So when will one of you set up live spider/web-cam ? (Poor pun alert) ;)

Am sorely tempted to get one, but have poor history of looking after plants so it's probably best I don't !! :D

Baggy

I have spoted this thread several times when visiting the GD area but have never read it. Today i sat and read the whole thing through and i have to say im mighty impressed. One of the best threads i have read in a long time. So hats off to Lopéz and Lostkat. I really feel that i dont need to own one as i just read this thread and get updates on the state of Jezzie and Miguel.

A very impressive read :D

Do you know how old/big they are and how much they are selling for? I can give you loads of advise, and there are lots of very helpful caresheets on the web too.

Trying to explain how big they are but struggling, say uhm 5cm's across, and it's £15 odd, it has the proper latin name underneath it so I'm going to go back next week after I've sorted out it's cage type thing :) Had a chat with the man at the shop too and he seemed to know his stuff, he even let me hold it :D

Can't wait til next week! Yay!:D

Excellent!

Chances are it will be a Brachypelma smithi, Brachypelma boehmei or Brachypelma emilia.

All are colourful, long lived, and easy to look after. Should be docile and easy to handle (but all spiders have their off days remember)

Glad you've found the thread of some use.

Oh, and the price is quite good btw. :)

It alreayd looks quite colourful:) And thank you for the thread, been one of the best around for aaaaaaages and it's helped me finally get my tarantula :D

Glad everyone's enjoying this thread as much as me and Leon are.

Phoolf - if you get your baby, be sure to take lots of pics for us all to coo over!! My 3cm emilia cost me £18 including P&P, so £15 is an excellent price. The Brachypelma are all pricey because they're so attractive and so docile. A full-grown adult emilia will fetch £90+ Whether it's a smithi, vagans, boehmei or an emilia you'll love it :D And being able to hold it will always be a plus.

Came home from work tonight to find out that Rio has FINALLY come down off the side of her tank, so I could take a nice photo to show you all how beautiful she is. Stunning markings already. I'm over the moon with her :)

Well, after a long time thinking about it (he hasn't eaten since February 8th) Mugabe finally decided to moult.
He's been sitting inside his tube web a lot, spinning extra layers of silk and building extensions.

At about 9:15 I looked up to see he was flat on his back in his ground floor burrow

Mugabe08

He remained utterly motionless until about 11pm...I looked up at 11:20 and he was almost entirely out of the old skin.

It didn't take long before he was entirely free - check out his new fangs, still white and soft. The old skin is on the left.

He was fully free by about 12:45, and pushed the old skin to the entrance of his burrow.

He's a LOT bigger now, but his abdomen is rather small and shrivelled (as always after a moult) I'll have to let him harden up for a few days before he can take food.

Here's the old skin:

When he decides to come out of his burrow I'll get some pics of him - he's now a really bright shade of orange.

His pads look really green/blue now........what a beautiful creature. :)

They were before?!

Stunning...Maybe next time a 3 hour long video showing the process? :D

Sure you did

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

My browsers dimnesions are 800*600, so the stoopid 'I'm with stupid' smiley points to a line from your post, not mine.

You'll remember next time.

Wow! Cool pics!

I have what is probably a stupid question.. but you pointed out Mugabe's fangs were white and soft after his moult.. does this mean that for the time being he can't bite? Or would his fangs still be strong enough to penetrate say skin for example?

I know you've mentioned before that you have to leave it a few days after a moult before feeding them again and you've mentioned the abdomen (?) being too soft until a few days after.. but are the fangs another reason to leave it that long?

Correct. Tarantulas can't feed whilst their fangs are soft. They have to wait for them to harden before they can cause the mechanical wound needed to inject their venom into prey.
