Hi im looking for a socket 1156 cooler but not sure what to get, ive seen very few listed 1156 coolers, quite a few 1366 ones, are the coolers for 1366 and 1156 the same?

i even tried to install a 775 cooler in today  it was close but like a few mm to small, i stopped before breaking the board

i tried another thermaltake bolt cooler (775) but the bolts didnt straighten out for the top plate lol

so before i kill this motherboard, can someone tell me what i should be looking for

also even the retail 1156 cooler felt like a struggle when installing

thanks

The three sockets are different sizes, so they don't fit each other. You can get the 775 Noctua and order the free bracket for 1156 (and probably 1366?) rather than paying the extra for the 1156 one. Very good cooler.

I have the scythe Ninja II rev. b and it's doing a pretty good job of keeping my 750 cool @ 4GHz

lol'd at the size difference!

Intel are missing a trick here in not releaseng a much improved cooler with retail release. Id pay a bit more for the chip (retail) if their cooler was upto much.

Intel gains nothing by encouraging overclocking, they'd rather you bought the higher clocked chip than buy the lower clocked chip and overclock for the the same performance.

But if you do buy the best chip they let you have it unlocked because it ain't going to spoil things much if you overclock that plus you've forked out a huge wad for it.

Hence the adequate cooler for stock performance. A small pebble on the path to bother you if you want to sneak extra performance out.

I'm currently using a Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus on my i7 920 and handles 4ghz very well. It has support for socket 1156 and can be had for around £20. It's well worth it in my opinion.

I am currently using the new Noctua NH-U12P SE2 on my i7 860 /msi p55 gd80.

It has an adaptor for 1156 (its actually a multi-adaptor as the holes for 1156 are just a tad different than the 1366). QUALITY cooler BTW. Its quiet as well. BTW I only used one of the fans that came with it as the 8gb of Corsair Dominator kind of got in the way, lol.
