Software DJ Mixer

Your matching prebeat matched tracks by listening to when they end and bringing the other track onto of it? Or have I totally got this wrong :P

I highly recommend you get two actual Vinyl or CD Decks, a Mixer and learn to do it this way! You'll get so much more out of it :)

rather than an MP3 mixer?

would've wanted a MP3 mixer as I like using software, or is it better if I go vinyl?

i've got serato scratch which is pretty similar to traktor.

awesome bit of software if you use decks/cd decks and a mixer to control the time codes.

simply drag and drop the track to each virtual deck which (pending you've connected the interface the right way round :D ) will be controlled by each deck.

great bit of software but fairly pricey (around 450 quid atm i think)

+1

Know loads of DJ's using this tidy little program, wouldn't mind grabbing it myself.

you can use software with a lot of cdj's, a lot of them are midi capable, for the ones that arent, you stick timecodes in and control the virtual decks with the timecode vinyl/cd, so you are mixing on decks but with mp3, only really needed if your cdj doesnt support mp3 discs though, vinyl is expensive, the players are cheap second hand, but a lot of old stuff you can only get on vinyl, also you can get some promos quicker on vinyl than mp3/wav from digital stores
btw, that hercules comes in 2 flavors, steel or rmx, the rmx has built in soundcard, never played on it but its quite popular, also you can get tks files for most midi controllers that dont come with traktor should you wish to use it, likewise with vdj you get midi mappers for different consoles that only come with traktor
seriously, if youre that new to all this, get yourself something cheap like the old hercules dj console mk2 off the bay, under 100 quid second hand, links to virtual dj or traktor, its got jogs, a fader and eq knobs and built in soundcard, everything you need to mess about with, pitch control is a dial though! but i dont think your too bothered about beatmatching by ear and just want to make a mix, they also hold their value it seems, you can use them as a timecode solution by running decks through them

I'm at work atm so can't really reply properly..

I use Traktor Pro and a Hercules Steel Deck.. they are easy to setup together and generally work very well.

I'm not really that good at mixing due to certain tracks just simply not beat matching... so I could never make the transition from bedroom to live event... but I do enjoy it and I also agree that the thrill of getting something matched and flowing is immense.

Another thats worth a look is Ableton Live... but the learning curve and expense of hardware is steep imo. I've tried to use it... but simply just can't.

I'm currently working on a mix tacking a track from every year over the past decade.. a decade of dance music.. but its taking a while...

Try putting together a 3 hour mix of your 50 favourite tracks... then do another mix with tracks 51-100.... and then another with 101-150.

Took me aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages!

9 hours of pure awesome though :D

but that would only give you 10 tracks? thats like a 25 minute mix unless you are literally mixing intro into outro which would ruin the flow
im putting 20 to 30 tracks into an hour mix

Depends on the genres. Mixing trance usually sees me get 10 or 11 track in an hour. Doesn't ruin the flow either, given most trance tracks are between 6 and 8 minutes in length.

yeah, thats true, im mixing hardcore, jungle and dnb so im only taking 2-3 mins of each track before dropping the next

Did a bit more digging, and found the Hercules DJ Control MP3 E2.. it seems really good and I've found it on Amazon/eBay for about £70. Only thing I want to know is if I'd need to buy a specialist soundcard to work it, or would the soundcard built into my IP35 pro mobo do enough for me?

that model doesnt have built in soundcard, it uses your onboard card, but it allows you to cue tracks in headphones, it says it needs a 5.1 soundcard to do this, so it will do yes, but doesnt have the output options the model with built in sound does, i.e. outputting straight to amplifier

I was looking at them but went with the Hercules Steel doing to it having more buttons etc the problem is without a soundcard you can't preview tracks but if you have a 5.1 soundcard in your pc you can setup the rear outputs to be your preview and front ouputs to be the live feed or you can buy a cheap £10 USB soundcard to use for your preview :)

I wouldn't mind the Steel, but it's a £100 difference.. which means I don't need to save up for it and could buy it now rather than in a month (impatience :D).

Comparing the two decks (MP3 and Steel) I can't see too much in the ways of differing features.. only that the MP3 is missing a master volume control (I can't see this being too much of an issue), gain controls, kill buttons (which I think would be nice), and has 16 rather than 24 customisable function buttons.

Vinyl if your a purist, CDJ if your modern. I've just made the switch myself and found it straightforward, as its assumed if you can mix on Vinyl you can mix on anything.

Personally I think your better off on CDJ's or Vinyl so you get a feel for mixing, and if you start playing out at clubs you'll be sorted in terms of whats in most of them, these days it being a Pionner MKIII. But its your choice, but I think your missing out :)

It's not missing much like you said but after using my steel for a while I would miss the extra buttons (cue's, loops and effects) + the mp3 one doesn't have the effect dials which the Steel has. But if this is your entry into DJing and you are just "testing the water" as it were as a hobby then the mp3 is probably your safest bet :D

its true, if you want to learn to mix properly, you need turntables or cdj's, you need to ask yourself what you want to achieve, if you want to become a dj then you need one of these solutions, if you just want to put sets together to listen back to yourself then a simple midi controller will help you achieve this, whatever you buy can generally resell at a good price so start off small and see how you go

Why are you using a Midi controller may I ask? Do you aim one day to play in clubs, or just for mates or in your bedroom?
