Software DJ Mixer

Just for myself, personal use. Don't think I'd ever have an interest in playing clubs.

I also don't want the hassle of amassing a giant collection of vinyls or CDs when I can just keep it all digitally, and I don't want to have some complex speaker setup and a load of decks sat in the room.. I just want to be able to DJ on my PC using what I have at the moment.

If thats all your after then I guess it works for you ;) But I bet once you really get into it you'll change your mind.

I'm the same as Bicko atm, I just want to be able to mix songs for fun then it'll probably progress into wanting to play a few live sets. but buying something cheap to start off with so I can build up my music is essential rather than buying an expensive mixer.

If I do, I'll then make the investment into higher quality equipment to suit my needs. At the moment I just need a Toys 'R' Us "my first decks" :P

I picked up my first set of CD Decks and Mixer Combo here for £60 ...

It was great, had proper pitch control, 3 band EQ, loops and hot cues. Was made by KAM aswell which are a fairly reputable brand. All the basics you need to learn :)

I dunno, I've been mixing for 10 years, and I seriously cannot be arsed looking for gigs. I get offered the odd set, but I mainly do my mixes for me, and if anyone else wants to download them, that's just a bonus.

I've just bought myself Traktor scratch with a Kontrol X1.. Should be here by tomorrow hopefully and I can't wait! Shame I'm away all weekend so won't be able to be up till stupid o clock in the morning drinking and mixing.. :(

I've had my decks for about 10 years now, but I'm finding it harder and harder to get the tunes I like on vinyl. I've played on CDJs but I personally don't like mixing on them so I thought I'd give Traktor a shot as I can still use my decks but buy music digitally instead.. Best of both worlds! :D

I found a cheap Kontrol X1 on the bay so bought that as I thought it would help the integration of Traktor so I don't have to mess around with the mouse on my laptop as much.

If you're looking for cheap things to start off with, check out Ebay. I bought my two 1210s and a cheap Numark mixer for about £250 around 10 years ago and the decks are still going strong today! I upgraded my Numark mixer for a DJM600 off the bay about 5 years ago, it cost me about £350 and thats also still going strong. There are some bargains to be had if you look around..

Thats how I am now.. I've done my bit playing out in clubs, had a couple residencies etc but the effort you have to put in for not many returns is massive. Its not about how good you are now, its about how much ass you can kiss which is a shame..

Or how many friends you can bring, or tickets you can sell... real shame!

Yep, quit pretty much myself when I got back from travelling. Just not interested in it any more. Specially when clubs like MOS take the **** with smaller djs.

Now I just play when and who I want to play for. Spend all my time producing - badly haha

My Hercules MP3 E2 arrived this morning at work, and without realising my entire lunch break has escaped me. Really enjoyable little mixer, does everything I need it to!

VirtualDJ, which it came with a full version of :D Need to go get myself a nice assortment of Electro House tunes now.

I use Ableton all the time, producing and mixing.

Currently working up a Live set so I can play in clubs, would like to get my hands on a Vestax VCM600. Perfect all rounder for studio and live. Would go nicely with my keyboard!!!

Now just need to find £500!

And lol Kr00ton, cant believe you've DJ'd out using Virtual DJ lol, its alright for a quick blast in your bedroom but lol if you turned up to a club and slammed that on!

whats wrong with it ? apart from that its not trendy because they dont pay people huge amounts of money to advertise it.

its better than tracktor used to be (not tried the newest versions) tracktor and serato used to be terrible with keeping beats syncd and had terrible librarys

i own and use ableton thesedays but im not sure wether i would play out on it or not. its hard to do an ableton set without looking boring behind a laptop

maybe i missed something but nobody has mentioned playing out on virtual dj have they?
i dont understand peoples problem with it, maybe its fanboyism, its a DVS, they are all DVS, its a means to manipulate vinyl or cd to control mp3 from an external source, THEY ARE ALL THE SAME!

They are in a way and then in others they are not. Latency is always a issue as well as support, features and fx and also stability. Serato for instance does not have many effects and is mainly focused around the scratch DJ. I won't bother explain each one.

But if people are happy with a specific one then great. But don't think that if people have tried them and have settled for the one which costs a fair bit rather than the cheaper one "which is the same" that they will recommend the cheaper one. I am a bedroom DJ. I have used VirtualDJ and Traktor. I ended up spending over £400 on Traktor for bedroom use because I found it the best. It's more polished. It's worth the cash and I think it's a great piece of software. I would also very much like Serato when it releases The Bridge with Ableton. That or I may think about Miss Pinky for Ableton. I won't slate people for using VirtualDJ. If they are happy with it then great. If they didn't like Traktor then fair enough. It's not about brand names as such just more along the lines as "Oh I can see why everyone uses this".

latency is not determined by the software, its all in the asio soundcard

features and fx! what effects that are software side are you using when mixing? you are using timecode and not midi ?
lol at serato being mainly focused around the scratch dj, scratching is done by crabbing your xfader and manipulating the turntable, nothing to do with any software
you dont need to explain each one to me, i have used them all, i dont regularly use any of them, i dont need a DVS, my denons play mp3/wav direct from usb storage, this is far better than any software btw
traktor is not more polished, serato is not more polished, vdj is not more polished, they are all digital vinyl solutions, they just have a different skin, with different ways of managing your 'crates', they are all basically the same thing, a timecode signal transmitted to an asio soundcard and equated to an mp3 track, unless you are not using timecode with these softwares, then just lol
if you like to think you can justify your huge outlay for a nicer GUI and think that makes it better, then ok, if thats what you wanted to pay for, but the NI soundcard does nothing extra an m-audio etc can do. all you need is a 4 in 4 out asio soundcard for DVS, vdj lets you use any, serato and traktor want you to use theirs and block all others, simply so they can whack a premium price tag on their product, end of story mate, its just business

Traktor and Serato need proprietary hardware. Helps with keeping the latency down for vinyl use. If I implied it's just the software I apologize but with Serato and Traktor I have to use some of their hardware so...

I use timecode vinyl and midi. The Kontrol X1 is for my cues and fx and I use my APC40 as a mixer.

I don't really get what's lol. I'm having a hard time reading your post. But it should be obvious that you get what you pay for.

If you think it's a premium fair enough. I think of it as support, hardware and software I know works well together.

VirtualDJ isn't the market leader for a reason. Most people use Traktor or Serato for a reason. It's not them wearing a label. It's them using software because it suits their needs better. There's a newish video on youtube of DJ Qbert summing the two up and he gives valid reasons.

But w/e. Use what you want and suggest what you want to other people. It shouldn't be about hating something.
