I'm a bit confused, i've just got an Xperia and its my first smart phone so I have a couple of basic questions that I hope you can help with

I want to link up to my Yahoo email, on Yahoo's website it states that I go to Android Market, seach for "Yahoo! Mail" and download it.
When I connected to the market I had to set up a Gmail account which was fine I did that, I searched for Yahoo! Mail and all it came back with was what looked liked an unofficial app by someone called Roid? Is this what i'm supposed to use?

Is anyone actually using it and if so does it actually check email for you and notify you of new mail or is it just going to be a shortcut widget thing to Yahoo's mail website?

If its the former do I need to have Background Data always enabled and Auto Sync and will that get expensive?

I hope this makes sense i'm new to this Android stuff

Thanks

Yes the roid one is the correct one, you could also look at setting it up through the email icon on the phone.

If you are worried about data charges download a program call Netsentry, it will monitor and notify you of data usage.

Thanks

I've tried the email icon, it doesnt work, it just says "authentication error" when I enter my Yahoo account details

I'm on a 500mb contract, leaving on Back Ground data so this Roid Yahoo thing can check for emails wont even scratch the surface of that will it?

No I have gmail set to push (so automatically sending through) and Hotmail refreshing every hour. It uses less than a couple of mb a day.

Thanks, i've tried setting it up manually and through ROID and neither work, I dont understand what i'm doing wrong, ROID says... "checking incoming server settings" then fails

ROID is not the correct one for starters. It's not made by Yahoo.

Go to the market, and just type in Yahoo. it's the first result and works fine

I use the official Yahoo Mail app called Yahoo! Mail for Android which is available for free on the market. Not ROID.
It works perfectly. All you need to do is enter your email address and password.

I dont get it, i'm looking at the market right now and all thats available is the ROID one, I cant see an official Yahoo! Mail its so frustrating! Is it because I have an Xperia Mini running 1.6 do you think?

Yes I think the official Yahoo app requires 2.1 and above.

Ok maybe thats why, surely i'd still be able to see it though and it just wouldnt let me install it. I think I can upgrade I remember Sony saying they will be releasing an Xperia Mini specific Android update, how do I attempt to update it?

Apps that require a minimum spec of the OS (in your case 2.1) simply don't show up unfortunately.

Not sure of any updates for the Xperia or Xperia Mini, Sony have been promising it for a while but I'm not sure if there's any definitive date

Does Yahoo not have exchange servers you can configure a mail client to access? Failing that there's always POP or IMAP?

Not that I know of, i've tried the pop and IMAP settings using the default mail client but when I try to verify settings it fails :( However finding Yahoo Mails official Pop and IMAP settings on the internet isnt particulary easy, its almost as if they dont want you have them, i've tried all sorts of combo's off forums but no joy

Can't find anything on IMAP but this is for POP from the Yahoo help pages:

Code:
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server:	pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server:	smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk (use authentication, optionally use port 587)
Account Name/Login Name:	Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com")
Email Address:	Your Yahoo! Mail address (e.g. [email protected])
Password:	Your Yahoo! Mail password

You will have to upgrade to Yahoo Mail Plus if you want to have your mails forwarded (log in to your Yahoo Mail account, go to Options> More Options > POP & Forwarding).
It's about $20 per year.

I'm fairly sure i've tried that combination of settings but i'll try it again as you found it on the official site where as I didnt

You dont need to upgrade you can do it with the standard account

Tried this but its the same, it actually goes out and checks when verifying settings but then comes back with, "could not verify" settings

I just setup an account (@yahoo.co.uk) using pop fine with the HTC mail client, so it could be the Sony client which is the problem?
