Someone check over my build please? <3

Turns out I may have to wait past Monday as my Nexus 4 has developed a fault and the way Google handles it is they place a hold for £280 on the account before the new device arrives - which is only released when the faulty unit is received - which means my funds are cut in half.

As to my use of the rig, it's mostly going to be image editing and Gaming - I don't do much gaming at the moment due to studies but I'm sure as soon as they're over I'll play some of my burgeoning Steam library built up over the sales! As such I want to build a machine that will be relatively future proof for at least the next 3 years or so (I know future proofing is a dumb concept but I don't mind if I have to drop the graphical settings a bit in 3 years time!)

As to one of the recommendations being to drop down to a 7950 - why? Is this a better idea than the b-grade 7970? I was under the impression the 7970 was a better card - has marketing tripped me up?

As for the ram situation - I'm not sure what I want there, I was thinking about messing around with a ram disk but honestly I don't think I'd ever seriously use it as I have a SSD already so a 2x4gb kit for dual channel operation IS probably a better option and as such I will probably consider that

And lastly, with the free shipping - Eh give me as many recommendations as you like ;) I shall be sure to reply a lot!

Concerning the power supply, does anyone know who the OEM for that modular Corsair PSU is? I wouldn't mind knowing as I've heard Seasonic are absolutely fantastic.

See, I am extremely tempted to use a Nvidia card for what seems like a dumb reason, and that is Mirrors Edge + Physx is absolutely gorgeous and I've never gotten to play it on highest settings with my current 8800gs/450gts without it becoming unplayable at 1080p

Does that 670 perform as well as the 7950 or the 7970?

Also who are POV-TGT - are they any good?

Oh nice, I didn't know about that tool, that shows me that the gtx670 and the 7970 aren't massively different in terms of performance gap, and as such the gtx670 is very appealing to me being a Nvidia fanboy since 2006 heh - But that POV-TGT manufacturer? What happens if my card kills itself 6 months down the line? Who handles the support since it's B grade - and any reports of their support?

Thought perhaps OcUK may handle Corsairs warranty.

Plus Corsairs warranty+customer care isn't anything like asrocks;)

I thought OCuk honoured the full warranty of all the parts they supply. In some cases it just makes sense to deal with the manufacturer directly.....which is why the Gigabyte UK based 3 year warranty is such a bonus.

I'm not saying the Corsair PSU is rubbish but the CX is their budget range. He had already used a modular PSU in his basket by the way. The extra headroom for another £6 or so does make sense :)

I'd just like to hear what he wants to use the rig for and what upgrades he might do, so we can get him a good base to start from :)

EDIT

Having seen the OP has now replied I need to make a confession. The HIS 7950 GPU is 5mm too long for the case (max length allowed is 290mm, the GPU is 295mm), the Gigabyte windforce 7950 would fit (being 270mm). He just needs to be careful what GPU he does order for that case

As for the PSU, assume my budget is £60 - I don't plan on ever crossfiring/sli'ing simply because by the time I think I'd need to, I'd probably be better served just buying an entirely new card

That XFX power supply appeals to me knowing it's DC>DC converter design. Are they regarded as reliable? Non-firestarty?

Yes mate they are good as they are rebranded Seasonic PSUs, which is why I used the 850W XFX for the Xfire spec I did.

You might have missed my edit earlier. You need to be careful picking the GPU, the Z11 case has a max card length allowed of 290mm. The HIS I spec'd is 295mm so it might not fit or be a very tight squeeze. The Gigabyte windforce 7950 is 270mm so that is safe but more cash. Whatever GPU you like the look of, check a review to see how long it is to avoid disappointment or end up looking a fool like I have ;)

Hahaha I will definitely be careful about that...wow that's a tight fit hahaha

Asus make very good boards in my opinion. Although the LX is not as good in the OCing department as the GB board, it is still a very decent budget board. If it has all the attributes you require and meets your needs, then go for it.

Okay, I think I'll stick with the Gigabyte board, it's not much more expensive. Gonna have to make a difficult decision with the graphics card though
