Somethingtodo's PSU roundup

if levicom psu ** looking at comes from site that starts with an a, look into there enermax noisetakers, better for the money tbh, levicom in friends comp has some fluctuations in 12 and 5v rails which irratates his mobo monitor a lot

Which PSU?

Going to be running the following

A64 3000 (or 3200)
ASUS or Gigbyte M/board (754)
1gb GiEL Ram PC3200
2x Maxtor HD's (40gb, 80gb)
1x Plextor CD RW
1x Pioneer 104 slot load DvD drive
SB Audigy OEM
couple of Zalman 80mm Case Fans
Leadtek 6800 GT Retail

What PSU would you recommend for that?

I'm thinking the 480 Trueblue from Antec, though some people say Tagan 480w is pretty good too.

I'm looking to spend really no more than £80, £90 tops.

Thanks :)

Hmm since OC's doesn't sell CWT, and the fact i'm buying everything else form OC's at the end of month (plus i can drive to OC's from my home really easy) i'm prolly going to pick up a Tagan, since the specs you've posted here and the price (£70) its not too bad over the CWT price.

Unless theres something about Tagan's i should know?

Why carry on recommending PSU with single 12v power rails if you can get the next generation dual 12v rails for the same price?...I do realise that the power supplies are good quality, but they are now being surpassed.
Maybe a caveat is in order that the recommended specs are changing when recommending an older supply?

Have Tagan fixed the ticking problem (allegedly from bad soldering)? Is all the old supply out of the system now?

My Tagan 480w is running great. Not noticed any ticking.. though it may be drown by the pair of 10,000rpm SCSIs :D

Tagan is a nice quality buy - but be aware of how much cabling there is on it. Great for all those devices, but you have to be creative as to how to hide the unused spares.

I get used to weird noises on my rig as the IBM SCSIs have this strange squeal like a mad cat. Every five minutes or so there is a short "Meow" from the case. I call it "character"... the machine is learning to talk...

Oh, I was really tempted by those Akasas a few weeks ago when they were on special offer! How stable are the voltages on yours? What have you got on your system? Do you think it will perform equally well under heavy load?
Hope you don't mind being the forum guinea-pig:)

The Akasa on mine wont even be breaking a sweat....
AMD xp2500 o/clocked to 3200 with 1.7v core, three system fans, one 80gb HD, cd, dvd

Only replaced it because a previous power supply blew and I got a cheapy the same day which only has 12A on the 12V rail!
The Akasa seems to be at the cheaper end of good supplies.

With ATX2.0 spec coming up, the Akasa should see me through a few upgrades, though the Antec Neopower with completely detachable leads looks very tasty, but a bit expensive.
Seems like one 12V rail is reserved solely for the cpu, and the other rails powers everything else - as far as i understand it.

I haven't read all the thread but one thing with all these figures.. often there is small print specifying the max power that can drawn from both 5v and 12v lines combined. The sum of the currents for both lines works out higher than this figure - so you'll not get the maximum current on one line if your drawing current from the other.

no problems at all and the auto temp sensor thing (make the fans spin faster when the temp rises) works a treat, i hear it spin up quite oftern.

;) every1 has there views tho.

wp on the psu readings \o/

had my 500w for a year, was pretty good for the money never had any probs either, apart from when i borked something fitting new fan lol still works just now it makes ticking noise :(

I've got a Tagan 480W and it makes a slight buzzing sound. Fitted easily in the back, yet my Q-Tec wouldn't go in that way and had to put in through the inside of the case, thus removing the motherboard etc first).
Not sure if the buzzing is due to one of the plates on the psu's exterior. If you feel around it, one of them is slightly looser than the others which appear rigid i.e. tightly fixed down. Could be this that's vibrating?
