Sonic Generations

Wow 18 posts about Sonic and not one from Bevy, something must be wrong :D

At 3am I downloaded the demo and played this. Mixed feelings. Seems fun but the full game will have 3rd person levels too which kinda puts the game on par with sonic 4.

Why the hell they don't just take Sonic 3 and make everything HD and add a load of new levels. I'm guessing they wont because somehow they would mess that up too.

It's because it would probably only sell 5000 copies as that would be the only people who would care to purchase it brand new, everyone else would rent, wait for sales, not be bothered or just complain as it isn't a 100% the same/Isn't modern Sonic.

As opposed to selling more than 5000 of dx battle or something along those lines?

An HD Collection/re design of Sonic 1/2/3/Knuckles & Sonic & Knuckles would be immense and would fill the Sega coffers up A LOT!

Cheaper production (not to sure what DX Battle is tbh :o)? Also with the XBLA/smartphone market not many players are happy to cough up full retail prices for a game that uses old game mechanics. Yet I'm guessing for Sega to pull off a good remake of the old Sonic titles they would have to spend a bit of money and use some of their best devs. Then with the market so niche for retro style games at either £10-40 (if full retail) I doubt Sega would make much profit.

Hmm good point. But I think Nintendo has a bigger fan base for their franchises as there really hasn't been a bad one and they still have the name association of a console to stand on where as Sega doesn't, plus it doesn't quite have as much pulling power and produces game for all ages and art styles (ie Yakuza), which I know Nintendo does but generally the art style looks quite tame and still accessible to younger players.

I would love for something like that to sell well and Sega are getting better at using their older franchises but I think most of us have be burnt by older Sonic games, Sega Rally Revo (not terrible), Golden Axe and such.

But at least the more recent Sega Rally, Afterburner, Outrun and such have been much more promising so maybe Sega could pull something like that off in the next few years ;)

Then maybe have enough money for Shenmue 3?! 1 can dream right?

Just played the demo and I think it is really good. Shame it is 30fps but then I guess that is the compromise for high polygon 3D graphics.

I take it this Green Hill Zone remake seems to be like a combination of the 3 from the original MegaDrive game cause I went back to play it earlier, just the first Act and comparing the two, the new Generations one just seems very different with the entire layout, especially from the half-way point and onwards.

Nintendo just change the levels and update the game to this gen without touching the classic gameplay, whereas the Sonic team are messing with the gameplay.

The term if it ain't broke...... seems to apply differently to either team, but I will say Sonic Colours on the wii seems to be the best "updated" version of sonic so far.

The frantic speed of Sonic in a 3D plane also causes too many problems as well, like annoying and uncontrollable camera angles, clipping issues and glitches too.

So it seems Sonics very nature i.e fast past platforming just doesn't work in modern times. Not much can be done about that with just releasing rehashes of the older 2D style or changing the formular altogether.

So guys how do you really want to see Sonic games head? HD versions of the old formular? I'm sure you'd get bored of that after a few releases. How about some Sonic Adventure style games? I doubt they'd be free from camera issues or control issues.

So it seems Sonic just won't translate well in this day and age regardless. Not really much the devs can do as yes it worked very well back in the 90's but its a formular that doesn't work now. Hardly the devs fault as how were they to know.

Sonic Adventure 1 was done really well, so I'm convinced it can work but Sonic Team are a husk of their former selves.

You can easily see how they've been experimenting different ways for Sonic to work in a 3D plane, and whilst some are quite good, they are still flawed.

The Secret Rings, Black Knight and Unleashed tried to do something with fixed camera angles and frantic speed and while it can look awesome, it is also very limiting and makes some of the gameplay hard as well.

It's never going to be an easy run for Sonic. And something I would love to see is a Sonic 2D with Vanillaware quality HD sprites. None of this 2.5D stuff.

The framerate kills it for me. For such a fast moving game, 60fps would have looked awesome. Guessing the fps has been capped due to 3d support.

Does make me wonder with this coming out why they bothered with Sonic 4?

I think this game triggered development after a group of people released a homebrew demo called Sonic Fan Remix a few days after Sonic 4.

People questioned what was Sega doing with Sonic 4 compared to the homebrew game. Even Sega themselves commented on how good it looked.

I do agree the framerate it a little ruff but they still have time to sort it out.

I think so. The 2D games were great. The 3D games weren't. It's not that I don't think Sonic could be good in 3D, but for that to happen Sega would have to sell him to Nintendo ;) That might induce a coughing fit in any Sega/Sonic fan, but in their hearts they know it's the truth!
