Sony Ericsson Android XPERIA

I understand why people complain that x10 is not running 2.x. But in defence, the Rachael UI was probably in development for 1.6 before they had the 2.x SDK. The Rachael UI is fairly complex under the hood and it needs more development to get it running on 2.x.

They probably don't have enough time to change it around with its launch window. So the only logical approach is to release it working on 1.6 and spend more time to perfect it under 2.x then release an update.

I'd rather they take their time and get it working great than rush it out because thats what people want. Take the Satio at launch as an example.

I'm quite happy to wait for a nice 2.x release than a rushed, buggy version.

I couldn't agree more.

Also Sony Ericsson support has been very good from my personal impressive from my own personal experances.

Hell im gonna be different and get a white one :D sim free of course.

I got a nice £30 pm / 30 day rolling contract on Voda.
1200mins, unlimited txt & landlines and 500gb internet.

A few excellent advantages to owning a sim free verison, you'll have no network branding and quicker software updates. :D

it just says to me that if it takes this long to update the UI to work with a new OS, they may not bother or just get even slower when version 2.2 or 3 or whatever comes out

i didnt go for the nokia n900 because i heard nokia were abandoning the maemo OS

SE have said on record that with verison 2.X Android it will not only bring massive speed improvements, it will also extend the battery life. :)

Android 2.2 should be coming "Cnet Asia is reporting that the handset may be updated to Android 2.2 (rumoured to be the ‘Froyo’ release) during the second half of the year"

You'll probably be able to port the HTC roms to the X10 and vice versa once the X10 gets rooted. :)

thats true, tho it does take time, looking at the contracts, i doubt the x10s will be as good as the pre order desire i have, hope the x10 will be available in the shops soon!

April 16th I've read the Desire should be in the shops. The X10 should be start to appear next week i believe

clove is saying 30th march at £410+VAT. I'm sorry but who in their right mind would pay that much when you can get a htc desire which is as good or better in most respects (screen slightly smaller admittedly) for £390 including VAT.

Ive not seen it at that price anywhere. x10 does have a better camera. The AMOLED screen is very suspect in sunlight. Both phones are on par with good and bad points. I think they're both equal in the overall balance. I deffo would't say the Desire is better in most respects.

Because everyone is different maybe? :)

thinner, more ram, more up to date android (theres no fixed date for 2.1 on x10), yes it has slightly more built in storage but android will have sd install soon enough. Mobile camera's are only as good as the optics, a high res camera doesn't mean a good picture. I personally think the amoled display is a bonus due to power requirements being less, its also multitouch capacitive versus the single touch (possibly resistive) on the x10. Having said that I'd still have a nexus one over both as I know it will be updated when a new version of android is released, htc is usually slow to release updates too, plus I'm not keen on the skins from either htc or x10.

But even if you say they're equal in the overall balance then it comes down to price - do you honestly think the x10 is worth over £480 compared with the desire (at the same place - clove) at 390.

Also it doesn't help when all the interface video's I've seen (including new ones with release hardware) show it to be slow and clunky in places - typical of the xperia brand really as the x1 and x2 had the same issues. And this is coming from someone who usually swears by sony ericsson phones.

Because everyone is different maybe? :)
true but sony's lost the plot with pricing again - just look at the xperia x1 and x2 (good hardware mind) being over priced compared with their competition. They keep being told of poor sales yet they put too higher premium on their sony branding

The HTC Desire is 2mm thinner; I do not honest think that is going to make that much of a difference in real world terms. It is more to do with the aesthetics of the device and how it feels on your hand.

The X10 is a TFT capacitive touch screen display not resistive as you have stated above, so it full upgradable to multi touch like a Desire. AMOLED screens are very questionable in my option, as i speak from experience as I used to have a Samsung Jet, which screen was hugely impressive but also i had a number of problems using the device in direct daylight. Therefore, I would say the advantage of the AMOLED screen is questionable at best.

Yes the Desire has more RAM 512MB VS 384MB, it does not seem to cause too many problems at this moment in time.

Android 2.1 has advantages over 1.6, but as stated in this thread SE don't use a standard Android 1.6 build as they have ported over many feature from 2.1 into the X10 for example the device support full Bluetooth functionally.

One thing I have not seen you mention in your thread is the Desire / NX1 media abilities; this is where the Android platform falls short. The X10 looks to address these problems and it does seem to do a good job at it.

The camera also has many advantes over the HTC devices not only are SE camera probably some of the best on the market for a portable device it also has a few extra added funcitions Touch focus, image stabilization, face and smile detection.

However, as the saying going the proof is in the pudding.

first off I said possibly resistive and it's also been reported that sony has said they will not be bringing multitouch to the x10. Now I'll admit I'm not overly bothered by pinch to zoom etc but it's nicer for the keyboard.

at this moment in time, none of the review units have had lots of apps running and second I've seen clear stutter in the review videos, so clearly somethings lacking and I'd say ram.

Thats not exactly an area I'm too bothered over to be honest but in my view apart from play now it mainly looks like a pretty skin and integration into timescape (which is the main area of stutter in the video's I've seen) as there an no additional codec's listed, not even div-x which is coming to the desire. I would expect google to update stock player soon like they did with the gallery and htc has their own media player which is quite nice in it's own right.

But like I said I'm a big fan of SE phones and I would pick one over another brand but when they're putting such a premium on their brand (as that's all it is) there's no wonder they're not selling as many when they eventually release the phones. If the x10 was only £50 more than the desire and had a firm date for android 2.1 (or higher with SE's release speed) then it might be more interesting but at nearly £100 more it's too much in my view.

If it's at the same price on contract then it might be different but as I refuse to be tied into an 18month contract due to the issues vodafone gave me I look at it from a purelysim free perspective.

I will admit I do quite like the x10 mini as a 'night out' phone which is supposedly only £230 according to play :)

This is a Quote from the SE Product Blog.

* Will it have multi-touch in future updates?
Xperia X10 has a capacitive screen. It does not support multi-touch functionality at launch, but is considered for the future.

I am assuming you mean you have seen stuttering in the Timescape interface, if you look closely at the video you can see it pulling down information from social networking sites.

Historically, SE have always had a higher cost attached to them when are bought sim free. Contract wise I believe the X10 and Desire should be the same price on the contracts.

Hmmm i do like that idea :D

Cost wise the Desire is cheaper, well you get an extra 300 minutes. So really not much in it when it comes to contract price.

Still undecided. I soo want the sony as its so sexy. But I can see the Desire being easier to live with.
