I made a thread earlier regarding a sub £200 compact camera as lugging my D550 around with it's lenses in the camera bag is just not ideal. And my S3 is simply not great for pictures...

Soooo, after reading a ton of reviews. I have decided to go for the Sony RX100, reserved on at a local indy camera shop and picking it up tomorrow.

Can't wait! Anyone own one?

Not quite the £200 you were going to spend ;-)

I've been considering one, trying to wait until after photokina in case something else comes out. But it's a battle I'm not winning.

Seems like a really nice camera. As close as you'll get to SLR quality in a compact it seems.

The price is pretty steep though

Too pricy for what it is at the moment. I am looking forward to the future of such cameras when one needs to go light. I am somewhat doubtful that the mirror-less camera are really the way forwards here, one you have added in some lenses, filters, tripod you are back to where you were with a DSLR, especially if you go fo the APS-C sized mirror-less camera. So a pocket sized camera with a fixed zoom lens with top end IQ in a small package with no fuss is quite tempting.

But for the price of the RX100 I will pick up an entry level Nikon and use some light lenses.

I still prefer the Olympus XZ-1

28-112mm with 1.8 aperture at the wide end like the Sony but 2.5 at 112mm.

The Sony is at 4.9 when it reaches 100mm.

So not only the XZ-1 has longer reach, but about 2 stop faster, which is huge.

Plus it cost much less then the Sony, although not £200 in your original thread which was the reason I neglect to mention it as it was over your budget.

I can even attach a flash gun on top of the XZ-1 too which is a bonus.

The sensor is much larger in the XZ-1 so when it comes to DoF and actual low light performance I believe the RX100 will still be better. but I haven't done the math.

I have the rx100 and have been very impressed, the image quality from it has been very good and indoors in low light it's produced some nice results. Video is also brilliant, I love the size as its tiny and easily pocketable.

Yeah mirrorless don't really fit any gap in the market, lenses are as just as large and heavy as 35mm ones, and much more expensive. While the bodies have poor sensor performance and are just as expensive as SLR's.

2.26x larger.

The mirrorless cameras tend to be much lighter than the DSLR and also quite a bit smaller. The NEX7 is a lot smaller than the A65 or A77 but the lenses are a simliar size as they are dealing with a sensor of the same size. The M 4/3 thou are a lot smaller and lighter than the APS-C ones with some very compact bodies and lenses and now a fair selection as well.

The way I see if is if your going to need a bag to carry it, you may as well put in an extra couple of hundred grams of SLR. The NEX-7 for example costs more than double the price of an SLR with a comparable sensor like the D5100.

The way I see if is if your going to need a bag to carry it, you may as well put in an extra couple of hundred grams of SLR with a half decent sensor. Compacts are pocket-able, mirrorless being a little lighter than an SLR is not much of an advantage is your paying a huge premium for it.

Its a different part of the market lugging round the extra lbs of kit and the extra bulk is a big turn off for a lot of people. I also think you might want to check the latest offering from Olympus and Panasonic if you think there is much difference between the output from those and a APS-C DSLR. There is a premium to pay but again its a few % not a huge premium.

How is 100% not a huge premium? Even a 50mm f/1.8 is 2x as much as a normal lens. I think that compact is the only viable option for just that.

Nikon D5100 to Sony Nex-7 because they have similar sensor performance, obviously though the D5100 has many extra features.

D5100 = £350
NEX-7 = £780

All for massive 210g weight difference...

The D5100 and the Nex 5N should be compared so

Nex 5N with 18-55mm = 429
D5100 with 18-55mm = 529

The Nex-7 and the D7000 or Sony A65/A77 are comparable for feature and performance.

The D7000 costs £700 to £800 and uses the same sensor as the D5100,so what is your point??

Well the 5N's sensor is not quite as good, but the D5100 with 18-55mm VR Lens kit is £398.

Compare the price of the 50mm f/1.8 lens for example.

Sony A65 is SLR size so not really here nor there.

The 5N and the D7000, A55, D5100 all share the SAME sensor?

What I meant was that you can compare the Nex 7 to the D7000, A65/A77 and for its features etc its in a simliar price bracket, much as the 5N and D5100 are as they are comparable.
