Sony RX100 - Thoughts?

Had a play with it in store and then the Fuji X10. X10 just felt better in my hands, Sony too small and fiddly but truly is pocketable.

Am off to NYC in December and can't decide what to go for. I prefer the images from the Fuji but the Sony ticks the box for 'pocketability'....

I am now seriously looking at this camera as an option for me. I also want pocketability, fast focus from switch on and great image quality. I had been thinking about waiting for the NEX-6 as it has a couple of extra features over the 5N and seems to review as being as good as the 7.

What would be the best card to go for? The Sandisk 32GB Class 10 Ultra SDHC UHS-I FFP Memory Card is a good price right. What about spare battery is it a necessity, should I go with Sony only or is there a good after market brand to save money on?

You prefer softer noisier images
Why not just use you camera phone?

The differences between the two when viewed at web size or even printed at moderate sizes will be minimal. There's no need to belittle Youstolemyname's preference over the Sony, it's not as if the Fuji is crippled in such a way that it's impossible to take photographs in the same way you would with the Sony.

I felt the images the Fuji outputted, particularly in Velvia mode, were more pleasing to the eye than the Sony. They just look better to me despite a lot of people on here saying the Sony produces the better images. I suppose when you are pixel peeping then the Sony wins but in everyday use, well, that's open to debate. X10 lens is faster at the long end too...

The X10 handles way better in my man hands but can't fit in to a pair of jeans. Am keen to see what the XF1 reviews come out like. Same sensor as X10 but with a slimmer body and slower lens at long end.

Im not disputing the RX100 isn't a great piece of kit; it really is awesome. It just felt too small and fiddly when I tried it. And I agree, it is probably the PP that I prefer and could achieve the same in Lightroom with some plugins.

I just prefer the feel of the Fuji in my hands and the images it outputs by default to the Sony. The thread on TP has some stunning shots in it which have swayed my opinion:

The dilemma I am stuck in at the minute is choosing between the Fuji and the Sony for a compact to replace my SLR kit on a trip to Manhattan. The Fuji is the better value but isn't pocketable. The RX100 is pocketable but a bit fiddly and almost twice the price.....

where abouts do you live mate ?if you're close enough your welcome to try my x10 ,its a camera capable of some fantastic results .and one thing worth mentioning is its such a fun camera to use i cant put it down .ive shot slrs, medium format and digital for around 25 years and this little thing is really putting a smile on my face

I live in Liverpool mate. Thanks so much for the kind offer, I had a go of both of them in the local camera shop to gauge real world capabilities of the cameras.

The only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on buying an x10 is the size of it. In NYC I can probably get away with it as I would have a coat on so it would fit in a pocket. But in somewhere like Vegas or LA in the summer I would struggle as it's not pocketable in jeans/shorts.

without a doubt it will not fit in your jeans pocket
a neck strap or belt pouch would be the only real way round that .or if your anything like me it would be almost constantly in your hand :D
