Sony RX100 - Thoughts?

I tweaked with the settings a little, but generally left it on auto all night long. Minor annoyances, sometimes, it just won't take the picture. It focuses in, sorts its self out, but no. Won't take a picture. Unsure if it's a setting, or a feature. Happens everynow and then.

You need to use a manual focus mode to take photos when that happens. In pure auto-focus mode a camera won't allow you to press the shutter if focus isn't locked, even if the image is actually in focus.

Some nice pics but I still think the Fuji X10 has the best IQ of the 'compact' market. Granted, the X10 isn't going to slip in your jeans pockets but it takes amazing shots.

What do you mean by better IQ, and do you have any info to back that up?
I would have thought given the Sony sensor is 2x larger would give it an advantage.

I would have thought the RX100 would easily outperform the x10 for IQ when viewed at the same output size.

Larger sensor doesn't necessarily mean better colour depth, dynamic range, iso performance etc.

The fuji x10 has better dynamic range than some mirrorless cameras for example.

Unfortunately since DXO mark has died, there's no sensor data for the Sony.

From what I can tell the X10 lowers it's res to 6mp at high iso or when high dynamic range mode is used. I'm pretty confident the Sony will outperform it at 6mp.

I was looking at the review/sample pics of both cameras on dp review. The fuji captured more detail in the portrait shots in my opinion...

Firstly to do a 'fair test' you would need to down sample the Sony to match the Fuji resolution. Something that DPR doesn't do.

Below is a sample from DPR, even without standardising the images it's clear to see the Sony is much better.

It's much better at taking pics of coins, that's true.

Are you just trying to be irritating, or are you trying to suggest that somehow portraits done in a controlled manner would show different results.
Are you suggesting that for some reason the X10 sensor doesn't like currency, and selectively under performs based on the subject?

Unfortunately if you are genuinely unable to understand this, then I don't know how else I can help and keep my patience. Best of luck

I'm just saying that the portrait I posted from the x10 captures more detail than the portrait posted from the Sony.

In fact, browsing through them the x10 pics are generally more detailed than the Sony.

Apart from the coins that is :D
