Sony XF90

Does anyone know if 4K/60 Dolby Vision is a limitation of this model? Using my Shield TV 2019 it says "Your TV does not support DV @ 60hz, only 30hz". Yes I have enabled enhanced format and am using HDMI 3 (ARC). I have used multiple cables (that all say they are 18gbps) as well all 2m and under.

Have you tried the 2nd HDMI port, just to test?
I have not, I shall give it a try!

Was there anything specific in that Reddit thread I should be paying attention to? I read it previously but I have done everything it says to do which is just to enable enhanced format?

The opening post seemed to go into some particular process for it to work for them. For me it was just a matter of using the correct HDMI port and also making sure that the enhanced setting was applied.

My Amazon Cube will play NF content in 4k at 60hz with DV.
Also Kodi will play at that resolution and refresh rate once whitelisted.

I know what you have written about your cables but are you sure they are HDMI 2 compliant and not just 1.4....? Then again 1.4 wouldn't support that transfer rate.

Nothing to set for the port on the Shield..?

Kodi cannot play back DV so it will be doing 4K/60 HDR which I can do.

I'm going to buy some cables that the guys over at AVForums recommended who have the same TV and soundbar as me and give it a whirl. If it's just cables then I'll be very happy. I'll let you know how I get on :)

I was just confirming that Kodi can play that refresh rate and resolution with no issues :)

Good luck. I just ended up using one of these...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B014I8SIJY/

cheap and works for me.
Thank you for confirming, it is appreciated :)

I have a bunch of Amazonbasics cables, all rated high speed, 18Gbps. The AVForums guys recommended these:

Cable Matters 3-Pack 48Gbps Ultra 8K HDMI Cable 2m with: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Overkill, yes. Guaranteed to work? Hopefully haha.

NP, Kodi was used from the TV prior to getting that cube. So not needed to bother about HDMI streaming at 4k and 60hz.
Thankfully the cube seems to get it all right with Netflix, as well as Plex and Kodi. It took me a while to figure out that having the Cube plugged into HDMI 1 wasn't the best choice, not understanding that it seems port 2 and 3 are rated for 4k at 60hz.
A pity that you can't test the Shield on another 4k TV or monitor.
I take it that you are testing a direct Shield to TV connection..?
I know I mentioned this but there aren't any settings for the Shield like the TV, for port enhancements...?

Good luck with those cables, they look good :D

No settings for the Shield that I can see. Had a Google as well and there is nothing I can find. Really hedging all my bets on it being cables. Massive XF90 thread on AVForums I've taken some time to read and it just seems HDMI cables can be so hit and miss. Some swear by Amazonbasics cables and they work fine, others needed HDMI 2.1 cables to get everything working. So, I will find out on Sunday where my fate lies hehe.

I was / am subbed to that thread over at AV. But not been there for a while. Another very good supplier of cables....

https://www.kenable.co.uk/en/

they also have an eBay store. I have used them for many many years and they typically get favourable reviews and comments.

Hopefully the cables should help. I do hope that it isn't a Shield issue, with that particular TV or more to the point your TV.

Best of luck.

Cables are very much hit or miss.

Cables can also fail over time especially if they are bent.

So a cable that used to work flawlessly won't forever

It's worth spending a bit more than Amazon basics IMO but not a lot more. Like the max I would spend on a cable is £8 unless it was going to be longer than 3 metres. Then you could say max budget of £20.

The whole £80 cable is idiotic however buying a decent cable that is reasonable usually pays for itself

Looks like Android 9 (Pie) finally came out for the XG90 series about 3 weeks ago. My TV said no updates, but grabbed the file and loaded it onto USB and upgraded from 8.0 to 9.0. :) Slightly off topic I know this is the XF90 but thought I'd mention it. :p

have you got the apple tv app with this update ? i was hoping it will come too the xf90 still on 8.0 here though heard there was a few hdmi issues so i'm leaving it for now.

So a small update on my issue, may help someone else at some point. After replacing my cables and enjoying a few days of no issues the problem returned. I would play something on Kodi, it would auto switch to 24hz and on stopping it would switch back to default refresh rate and I would get a black screen, "nothing to display" type screen.

After a few on/off/changing inputs I would get a picture back and rinse repeat.

Decided to try a factory reset and this seemed to do the job. Another few days of bliss until... It started happening again.

The default res/refresh rate on the Shield is 4k/59.94hz. I never thought anything about this. Something said to me "just try 4k/60". Had to dig in the settings a bit to find it but set to 4k/60 and like magic, no more issues!

Honestly it's all a bit weird because on HDMI 2 I could use it at 59.94hz all day long no issues. It's only HDMI 3 that seems to have the issue and I need to use ARC so it wasn't an option to use 2.

Having had this TV a while now and not seeing a way to show it, I assume there is no way to see what refresh rate is currently being displayed? Pressing info only shows resolution. I think it will show 1080p/24 but that's it, only ever shows 2160p when in 4k.
