**** Sony Xperia Z3 ****

Unprecedented level on popularity on this phone and the Compact. I can't recall a Sony smartphone ever before gaining this much attention. It appears that there's more talk about these than the latest Samsung offerings.

I think it's deserved though, they are doing things a little differently to other manufacturers and it's starting to pay off. Waterproofing and battery life have people interested and the Z3c is in a class of it's own in that size bracket. Sony also have a very attractive design language, their phones look very sleek.

Design wise Sony phones do feel/are more premium than Samsung. Samsung trying now to change that with the metal frame with Alpha and Note 4. Sony do fall down a bit with their software, slow updates, quite boring UI and not as feature rich as Samsung.

But Sony are begin to give a good fight, not gimping the compact, classy hardware design and well priced. If Sony would take a more Motorola software approach with only slightly skinning the Android OS they would be the Android phone of choice.

The price drop really helped the compact along with the new colours, better design and crazy battery life.
The screen on is really fast, just saw a video comparison with other phones and they were really slow compared to it.

Z2 had the same issue with the sunglasses, I remember seeing this video about it

I don't know which Samsung or Sony phones you've used but this Z3 has all the features I used most often on my Note 3 such as screen mirroring, throw and this has a few features Samsung don't have like network drive mapping.

As for the simplicity of the UI, that's preferential but I much prefer Sony one due to it not being littered with multicoloured icons that are big and round as well as it keeping to stock Android in terms of form.

It also has screen recording out of the box from the power menu and having tried it out it's buttery smooth 1080P capture is better than the paid aops I used to use on the Note 3.

Essentially Sony have focused on what is important and done them really well in this ohone and didn't bother baking in a tonne of crap like other makers have done.

To me that's a welcome change and on no way something to state as "less features". In this instance less is indeed more.

sony released the update to 4.4.4 on the 9th September which i believe was the same day as samsung for the s5 and motorola for the moto g. so i'm not sure slow updates is accurate any more. They all similar with update times at the moment (my htc one m7 is still on 4.4.3)

See the 6 dots at the top? - There was a google bar in that position which stayed stationary as I flipped through screens. It didn't use up any space on any of the home screens hence I find will be useful. Problem is I don't know how to get it back lol!

@Confused - Any chance of a favour please? - Select the google bar and pull it down to the X to get rid - It should prompt you with some instructions on how to re-enable it. thanks

Hey Zoomee, what is that data and wifi counter app you are using :)?

The text select magnifying glass that comes up is neat. Yes a handful of other phones do have similar too but I haven't seen one that looks like a piece of domed glass that distorts as you get to the edges?

(Ignore the autocorrect!)

Yeah it's Sony's baked in text editing add-on so will work with any keyboard on any launcher or anywhere that you can select text. I use Nova and SwiftKey.

Also, Vs S5 Vs Note 3. The Z3 is a shade taller than the S5 but smaller in all other dimensions and volumes :p

Obviously the battery isn't optimised yet either so I'm assuming its still to get better from here.
Oh and all that is with all power management stuff turned off!

REALLY glad I got this phone and didn't bother to wait for the Note 4 - bargain at £420!
