'Sorry mate, not allowed in because you aren't with someone'

So this is how the so called hospitality trade go about weathering a financial crisis is it? Remarkably astute, I must try this myself, sounds a winner...

Actually the Manny Cohen in me smells a ruse "Rent a bar friend"

Who said anything about a wine bar?

Possible colloquial difference, maybe big cities actually have specific wine bars which only sell wine... if so my mistake, however where i come from generally there are bars and pubs (with bar / wine bar being the same thing) and you dont have bouncers deciding who is good enough to go into a pub....... just so long as you are not filthy, a plonker or utterly wasted.

Technically there is no difference between a pub and a bar (a pub has a bar so in effect all bars are pubs, or is that all pubs are bars??? however in general terms in the uk there is very much a difference between a pub and a bar, a pub imo being a more traditional place, likely to have been around for ages, largely unchanged for generations, where as a bar is more following local trends and may change radically with different owners.

as Chris already said, bars tend to charge a lot more and because they often are trying to big up themselves, they have a habit of trying to appeal to a certain type of patron.

given there were bouncers on the outside and it was specifically stated bar not a pub then that seemed pretty clear the type of place. i can delete the word wine from my post if you prefer.

maybe i am painting bars with an unfair prejudicial stick... but just saying my experiences. Traditional pubs to me are far friendly places and a lot less superficial.

I wonder...... i havent looked lately but there used to be a working mens club not to far from me..... I wonder if they are allowed these days? I have never been inside but i am told the beer was very cheap - and free pool as well.

Oy, you could have got my best side mate!

I think that type of discrimination is quite common.

I had a night out last month and went to try a new bar/restaurant that had opened. Asked if they had a table for three but they said no despite it appearing a very quiet night (whole town was quiet). I think it was purely down to our age. None of us are stunners but we look respectable, not being loud, etc.

Machetes are the all encompassing membership cards these days :)

There's a strange anomaly with the "Working Men's Club" in these parts., Nothing wrong with the club, nothing wrong with the prices, nothing wrong with the ale. It's just the name. I know a lot of people in these parts, and whenever i have been in I see VERY few that I know are working men ;) I did mention this to the chief steward, but got shushed and shooed into a corner.

Oh dear, I wasn't aware this was a thing. Certainly explains why @Roar87 is single though, he can't go alpha male in the clubs anymore :(
Everyone should be allowed the right to be an alpha in any pub/bar/club tbh. It's not like it's hurting anyone.

In other news, who on earth goes to pub/club/bars anymore?...

Chris Wilson wouldn't be seen dead in a bar!

Oh I dunno, there was a time or two I was pretty comatose, but dead would definitely be an exaggeration ;) The last time I recall was some dive on Lloyd Street in Manchester :) The wife wasn't very happy getting a phone call at 2.00 AM. A friend got me to his car after a struggle, but I was buggered if I was getting in it, apparently I wanted another hour in town. Her indoors just said, "Oh leave the idiot there, I'll no doubt get a call in the morning, God help him. He's not trying to fight anyone is he, you know he always comes off worst and even uglier". (She was right of course...God bless her) <LOL>
