'Sorry mate, not allowed in because you aren't with someone'

Oh dear, I wasn't aware this was a thing. Certainly explains why @Roar87 is single though, he can't go alpha male in the clubs anymore :(

Where as you're so happy in your relationship you're actively picking fights with people in an online internet forum instead of spending time with your wife xD

Actually when I was 19 I stupidly went out without any ID, the bouncer wouldn't let me in to the club my friends were in so I stood outside for a bit, then this pretty hot blonde girl asked what I was doing so I explained to her I couldn't get in, she held hands with me and walked me past the bouncer without him caring

I was waiting for a mate in Clapham early Saturday evening (so around 5ish) and thought I'd wait in a bar, chuck on Netflix and have a pint.

I was turned away from 5 places for exactly the same reason. I had a good chat with one of the bouncers and yeah, it was quite sad to hear that the rule is there to stop weird guys coming in by themselves to harass people (I suspect girls though...) Apparently its the same rule for girls and they can't come in by themselves.

Anyone heard of this? I am 34, always been in London and not come across this or heard about it through mates/randoms.

I guess I could have lied but then I would have been watched all night then probably kicked out...which would be embarrassing.

Honestly, I get it and sounds reasonable to protect people but yeah its quite sad it has come to this. :(

EDIT: This was bars so not pubs.

Well you have no mates so clearly this story was a lie.

Post 5 was mine? :p But no I agree. Probably colloquial differences. To me and usually means either a sports/American type bar, or a bar that has ideas of being a club later on in the evening (loud music etc). A wine bar is a much more relaxed affair and instead of serving cheap lagers, serves well.. I’m sure you can guess.
maybe i am painting bars with an unfair prejudicial stick... but just saying my experiences. Traditional pubs to me are far friendly places and a lot less superficial
I totally agree.

Imagine it’s because you went to a bar rather than a pub. A bar on a Saturday doesn’t really want someone watching Netflix on their phone, takes away from the atmosphere.
I regularly go for solo pints and don’t think I’ve ever been turned away for being by myself.

I very much doubt the door staff were aware that @SideWinder was planning on watching Netflix on his phone in the bar when they turned him away so unlikely that was the reason.

Chris Wilson wouldn't be seen dead in a bar!
I asked my English neighbour the same question tonight and I left with an impression which is frighteningly similar to this.

He described it to me as “In a pub you sit at a table. In a bar you stand up and put your drink on a shelf.“
