Sorry to rant but.....

oh man this thread is very, very silly.

its quite simple- the op got id'd as the store have a policy not to sell solvents to under 21's, as is their right as a retailer.

the op had id that proved he was legally old enough to buy solvents (older than 16), but not old enough to buy solvents under the store's 'no solvents for under 21s' policy.

this is perfectly normal. as has been stated a few times (sometimes using silly examples), a retailer can set any policy they choose as regards who they sell to. You have no 'right to buy'. The retailer has the right to choose who to do business with.

It is perfectly legal for them to refuse to serve anyone, for any reason whatsoever, providing that reason does not break the law. In fact, it isn't just perfectly legal- it is the retailers right.

The law states the minimum age at which you can purchase something. It does not mean the store has to sell it to you because you exceed the minimum age.

I can't really see how people are getting confused

"No, I'm afraid it's store policy..."

Kick up a fuss and you might get the manager... you'll have him all to yourself for a few seconds whilst he orders security to escort you off the premises.

I don't know how you'd go about things but it is possible to be polite!?

If he/she explained to me why they can't sell it to me then I'd probably accept it and try somewhere else.

I've been asked for a long screw, i'm not sure who had a redder face. Aisle 17 sir:p
tbh, iirc B&Q don't let you have sex onsite, even if it is in Aisle 17 :p

You've missed the point havent you, chap?

Your whole point is that the law states that you only need to be 16 to buy the goods, but B&Q are stating they wont sell unless your 21.

My example IS relivent. Like the situation the OP was in, I deny service based on MY store policy, just like B&Q did... perfectly legally.
Exactly.

At TNT we ship Hazardous Goods, provided the shipper meets certain criteria. There are certain minimum restrictions put in place by the Government, our restrictions are tighter again than these - because we don't think the Government legislation is tight enough to protect our best interests.

We get lots of people shouting about it not being illegal to ship X and Y, but it doesn't matter - if we don't want to ship it then we won't, simple as that!

My point was that asking for a manager is futile considering you have no grounds to speak with them politely (provided the clerk has explained it's simply store policy), and if you kick up a fuss you might get to see them, but not to have a polite discussion about the store's policies.

So, you can move out at 16 but you can't paint your house/ flat til you are 21 according to b&q.
Stupid tbh, surely it'd apply to tinned paint too becuase you can get high off that.

Just a thought.

When was the last time you decorated a room with spray paint? You cannot get high off solvent free or low solvent content paint, as most common emulsions are.

:/ right.

Just so we are clear... I agree with you.

It just appears that people around here seem to think if they dont like/agree with something, its a breach of their human rights.

I see, ninja edit!

Well I think you should be free to decorate your place when you get it, saying you can't would just be stupid.

I'm pretty sure gloss isn't low solvent, white spirit isn't either is it, paint thinner?
I dunno but wouldn't you just go to tescos and buy some deodrant, who really wants to paint their nose black?

Gloss can be, B&Q do a low solvent one. Paint thinner and white spirit are both covered by our restricted product thing and therefore can't be bought by under 21's.
No one said you can't decorate how you want, just buy your paint etc from another diy store, B&Q are not the only one.

this sounds made up but its a true story.

i went in to B&Q and bought 2 tins - primer and a matt black, the big plastikote ones, oh and a stanley knife, young guy about 23/4 asked me if i was 21 (im 19 nearly 20 but look about 17), i said yes (i didnt engage the brain before mouth), he said 'you sure', gave him a funny look and said yea i have id if you want to see it. he didnt bother asking for it and continued to put my items through. i just tired to play it cool and not get figity as i needed the knife for work and the paint for a project i was working on at home

Can't say this beats my trip to Asda...

On the till it says 'If you look under 21 we have to ID you', ok this is fair enough methinks, stops underage selling of booze etc. fine.

I put my alcohol on the till...

Till Girl: Are you 21?
Me: Sorry? (hadn't heard her properly)
Till Girl: Are you 21?
Me: Oh, yes, sure, want ID?
Till Girl: Ok, no it's ok.

Now at this time I was 19 (almost 20), call me thick, but asking if you are 21 and asking for ID if you look under 21 is a vastly different thing, technically she was breaking the law and I should have reported her to be honest, ah well.

Exactly which law was she breaking?

Legal age to buy is 18, you were 19. Problem?

So she cocked up on the Think21 process but there is nowhere that says that you have to PROVE you are over 18 to buy alcohol, merely that you must actually be 18 to purchase.

Laws broken... 0.

I guess.

Just seemed that she always asked if people were 21, and not for ID, so a 17 year old could go to her till and buy alcohol etc.

More an observation for people trying to break the law and buy underage.
