Ok I have been at uni in southampton since last september and was prepared that in a big city stuff would happen. I rarely read papers or wactht v any more cause theres usually nothing that affects me and someone would say if there was. Now as people who live in the area might know 3 students were beaten up in the road parrallel to the uni last week (I think), and this has kind of worried me. I mean I always thought I would be safe in a small group. Also on top of this I asked around and it turns out that one of my close friends had her bag snatched off her while she was walking and another one had her bike stolen from right on the uni campus. Now this is kinda mad, i know theres going to be crime but considering I dont know more then a couple of dozen people this much be hugely widespread.

Has anyone else had problems in southampton?

Soutamptons like any city, you just have to be a bit careful thats all

I've had 2-3 bikes stolen from the Southampton Central right under the watch of CCTV!

Best thing to do is not let it worry you and enjoy your time here, and don't walk though the common on your own or anything stupid like that!

I've lived here all my life (17 years bar one in Sydney) and a stolen bike or two is the worst thats happened to me

Yup, all Cities have their bad areas and bad eggs. If you're not used to it, it's all going to come as a shock and be a little intimidating.

Be vigilant, sensible, and enjoy the lifestyle.

Yeah I have to say I lived in christchurch near bmouth before here and we were used to dozens of idiots hanging round everywhere at night causing trouble and smashing things, but not to this extent of actual malicious crime. It has come as a shock.

I went to Uni in Bournemouth mate. Not a city but, yes, idiots exist. But I never let it stop me having a bloomin' good time.
Give it another few months and you won't even notice such petty crimes.

I'm a London boy, possibly the petty crime capital of the world, and I don't even notice unless I happen to pick up a local Chronicle or the Metro. Not even the Evening Standard fills their columns of such crimes anymore.

I'm at Uni here at the moment, and ive lived here all my life, you just need to 'learn' the places not to go at certain times (like the common at night, unless you enjoy 'that' sort of thing) and you should be good.

Ive not been touched once in 18 years, or had anything nicked.

Don't let it worry you, it is very rare for people to get beaten up for no reason at all, it wouldn't surprise me if those three had been mouthing off beforehand or something.

I've lived in Soton for 4 years and I've had my car broken into and the radio/cd changer stolen. Apart from that I've seen a few fights in the center after kicking out time, but I wouldn't say its any worse than any other big city to be honest.

We had a mate, not a uni goer, attacked down in one of the parks by civic centre. He walked up from Icon. Unfortunately for the attackers, that meant he had sobered up a bit and considering this guy is literally a HAB with accolades in fighting sports he hit one and the other 2 ran off...

We would've paid to have seen that..

Myself, ive not noticed any problems really.

ive never had any problems with with living in southampton bar one time where i parked my car in a student area (glen ayre road) and only wake to find some idiot had run across the top of it.

as with all places you should take sensible precautions and more than likely you'll be fine

The police have put up a yellow sign round the corner from us, appealing for witnesses to a shooting a couple of weeks ago.

In Southampton or London? Your location is ambiguous!

If you live in St Marys i can believe your story though.

South London... gun crime seems to be on the rise, but at least it seems to be organised gang related gun crime rather than random shootings. :o

Nothing surprises me when St Mary's is mentioned :p
i go to evening classes at the college in st marys. :/

i think southampton is actually a pretty rough city. the worst crime i've known of whilst ive been here is one that happend on adelaide road (st denys) just five doors up from where i was living. some guy forced his way into a womans house and raped her. police were crawling all over that area for ages, and because i lived so close i got interviewed in my own home and had to give a dna sample.

in another incident i was walking near the tesco express in portswood (near the hobbit) and a chav **** randomly tried to puch me in the face for no aparant reason at all.

i think i'm here in soton for another 18 months or so, and in all honesty i can't wait to move.

We'll be gone from soton come the summer.

I've not really had any problems personally, but have heard about them. Having said that, someone nicked our doormat.
Its a first floor flat so it can't really have been some random drunk passer by. That really annoyed me that

Original Poster - where have you come here from?

Southampton, as has been said, is like any city; it will have crime.

I've lived in Soton all my life and I can't say it particurlarly bad. Students do tend to be picked on and as Southampton has such a large student population some people's views are disproportionate to the city as a whole.

You vist have to be vigilant.

im at solent uni, and to be honest i feel more safe here than i did in portsmouth. i think the streets are fairly quiet at night, or full of drunk students.

I'm living in Bassett at the moment, right on the edge of the 'Flower Estate'.

The worst I've had is a is stones thrown at the windows and the bin was burnt down.

I did overhear one of the cashiers at the co-op over the road saying something about going out and scaring students :/
