Doesnt matter what you know or what you have, baseball bats are going to do damage! Especially if there is more than one person.

I'm (probably) moving back to Southampton this year. Was there at uni from 1998-2001 but never really saw too much problem apart from burglaries and bikes being nicked etc. Someone put a brick through our bathroom window (ground floor) too, if anyone had been in the bath at the time they would have been cut to shreds...

Must admit I'm slightly worried that we'll buy a house and then find we've moved into a really rough street. Certain areas are known to be 'bad' like St Mary's but until you live somewhere you never know exactly what kind of idiots could be in your street. There's a lot more chavs and eastern europeans (oooh, controversial!) in Soton than there is in Salisbury.

i have been in Southampton or thereabouts for 27 years, had a few fights, had a bit of trouble, then again i walk through the common at 3am every friday & sat, (no not like that ;) ) you just have to be street wise.

Southampton is a lot better than many many cities, you try it up north mate or inner london....

as said before, every city will have crime, it's the way it works

Original Poster - where have you come here from?

I am here from christchurch near bournemouth. and bournemouth on nights out is really rough, but confined to the clubbing areas. and christchurch is just roaming gangs of chavs causing trouble. Cops gave up and dont do anything now.

tbh I've found places like Romsey worse for getting trouble from random chavs! Think its because there is less for them to do so more end up on the streets but had lots of partys crashed by them and my friends who live there have been in some fights and countless non-violent meetings with chavs

i grew up in romsey, the problem is, you have so many pubs and little else to do, and everyone knows everyone, very hard to keep a low profile in that place, but as i said we are lucky down south, you think it's bad here then move around a bit. :p

I've lived in the Soton area for 25 of 27 years and never had any trouble at all.

As people have said tho you're going to experience problems just about anywhere, but statistically you're more likely to have a problem in a city due to the increased population density.

I'm living in Pompey nowadays and although its got more of a bad rep compared to Soton its not unbearable. I'm living in Somerstown as well..not quite Leigh Park but its quite well know as being one of the more undesirable areas of Pompey. Have had a few problems with damage to cars but our road is a favourite route home for a lot of drunk students who think its funny to snap off car wing mirrors for a laugh

I've had a bike nicked from outside portswood morrisons but thats all(so far). I've found Southampton to be quite good really, I live near the Burgess Road Burger King so it's not the nicest area, but I've not had any problems. I like it enough that I'm staying here after I finish my degree.

I have lived in Southampton all my life. I really can't wait to leave. The worst thing that has happened was when I was mugged, but its the chavs that really annoy me, they are just out to cause trouble.

Its just a fact of living in a city though you get the dregs of society. I want to move to a village/small town because city life isn't for me.

we are blessed with some good village's and towns around Southampton, i love walking around the New Forest area's

Ive lived in s'hampton 3 years now and I also live really close to the flowers estate and the top end of uni..

I personally havent been the receipt of crime but the neighbours have been burgled and a friend had their car crashed into my joy-riders but I dont know anyone whos been the victim of violent crime.

As with living anywhere else, just be careful. I.e. dont park your expensive car in a crappy back road and dont leave your windows etc open when you arent at home. Above all else, dont go anywhere at night in a small group (3 or less)

When going out, theres tends to be 5/6 of us and Ive never felt intimidated and its a 40 min walk to the hobbit!

When I was a student I went to visit one of my mates in Southampton and we all got the absolute **** beaten out of us. Was just walking along and some bloke ******* me right across the bridge of my nose with a rubber mallet

We were damn lucky that a police car came round the corner as one guy was on the floor getting kicked in. God knows what might've happened if the police hadn't randomly shown up. Still didn't manage to catch the goits, though, did they?

IIRC some asian chap suffered a similar attack about a week later and died in hospital!

OK, i'm willing to change my above statement now, 14 of us were playing football on the common and a group of about 25 fat lippy asian ****s started on us.

Just because someone accidently spooned our ball into their 'pitch'. If you want a bloody exclusive pitch walk the extra 15 minutes you fat ****s and go play at the sports centre.

the common can be a wonderful place or hell, you really do get all sorts down there.

I'm starting to change my mind about Southampton. In the last week a mate over the road has had one car burnt out, one jumped on caving in the roof and an aerial snapped off. His house mates fiesta has been broken into twice (still in this same week), and my neighbours fiest has had two windows smashed and a wing mirror pulled off. Bloody ***** kids.

Slight necro post but what the hell:p.

Actually fellow uni students may know of the violence and attack thread on the susu forum recetly. Wessex Scene should be making a big article on it soon.

Anyway, I think there are worst places to be than Soton, even though Ive had coppers chasing a yob down my back garden recently. I look forward to moving into halls for my final year!

(good to see plenty of Soton OCUkers, will enlist their help once I decide to do a self-build).

Sam

One thing I have to say in Southamptons defence is the police seem to be pretty "keen". You see loads of cars around, police wondering around and they did come out and check out what had happened when my friend called them about his car (both times:rolleyes: ).
