Space: Above And Beyond

I thought that show was fantastic. To be honest I was extremely miserable when watching the last episode and finding out that was the last episode. I was grouchy for about a week :D but I thought it was great. Quite tempted myself to get it, it was a top show.

"You're dead, the whole squadron is dead, now get out!" Major Frank Bougus was ace :)

I got this set when it first came out a few months ago. As [DOD]Asprilla said the picture is really good especially considering when it was shot.

I love downbeat endings, the Angel finale anyone! :)

I loved it, but I was fairly young at the time so I can't remember much of it. Dark Skies was around the same time wasn't it? Those were both quality sci-fis (although very different) that I liked and that got cancelled. :(

As Mic said, the new Battlestar Galactica is very similar to it. It's got the same 'rawness' and lack of "aren't we all lovely?" like the Star Treks of this world have. All the characters have flaws and strengths to them. Well recommended to anyone in this thread that hasn't seen it.

S:AAB is about the only truly memorable Sci-Fi series from when I was young, being at college at the time I was staying up and watching it, spesificly got a subscription to DigiGuide so that I could set reminders I loved it that much.

It is about the only Sci-Fi that sets out to take on some difficult subjects (Racism, Relationships, Compassion) in a way that dosn't gloss over it with a Star Trek/B5 the human race is infinitly compasionate and always striving for peace way.

Spotted it after Christmas on the web, was seriously tempted to get it... cash flow problems prevented me purchacing it.

Were we watching the same version of B5. Its story lines were renowned for dealing with issues such as politics, religion, racism, humanities darker nature etc. Trek certainly glossed over these subjects but B5 certainly did not. It was by far the darkest Sci-Fi show that had been done to that date as the main characters were in no way perfect and were prown to killing people off that got in their way. I'd say only the new BSG rivals B5 for grit and darkness and i really do think the new BSG to a lot of leads from what B5 had done before. What S:AAB had was a sense of believability, you really could believe that it would be exactly like that in the future. The ships looked correct, the way the technology worked felt correct. It was simply a very good show that should never have been cancelled.

On a side note is anyone watching Invasion ? Does anyone notice any similarities between it and another great show that was cancelled early, American Gothic.

I thought Invasion was much closer to Dark Skies in many ways.

Weebull is right that it got canned too early as well, there was so much potential in that show as they gradually moved from the fifties through time catching up to the present day.
And JT Walsh and SevenofNine were in it.

I loved Space Above and Beyond!!! Havent seen it in ages, must see if i can get it on DVD, why they cancelled the series i have no idea?

They had 2 new major shows that year S:AAB and The Adventures of County Brisco Junior with Bruce Campbell and thought the Bruce Campbell show would last longer. They cancelled it after 2 series and they should have picked S:AAB as who knows how long it could have run.

the space combat scenes paved the way for whats happening in Battlestar Galactica now....near silence, and aircraft than can pivot and spin and fight in any plane or angle

you can draw parallels when you see a viper spin through 180 degrees and shoot at whats following it

my favourite episode of SAAB was The Angriest Angel where McQueen destroys Chiggy von Richtofen..superb

Oh don't get me wrong, B5 was great and on an episode by episode basis it dealt with some very meaty topics. I just feel that the concept of humankind building stations that are the last hope for inter-racial peace is more than a little hopeful.

I've still not quite made up my mind on Invasion. It seems more like Lost than anything, with it's constant vagueness. The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be any confusion over the 'what' of the matter (as in "what the hell is going on?") like Lost, only the 'why' ("why exactly are they doing this?"). However, it has got me watching, so I guess it's working. The only real similarity with American Gothic that I could see is that the sheriff of the town is up to no good.

However, since Invasion isn't out yet over here, as much as I'd like to discuss the plot properly here, I have a feeling we won't be allowed to.

i used to love this series.. i watched it on sky one when i was little.. i remember the last episode.. there was a big battle and i think some of our heroes died.. and the fighters were crashing towards earth/some planet

Invasion is created by Shaun Cassidy the person behind American Gothic. There are a few similarities although the premise of the show is a bit different. Small southern town (i assume) , Sheriff is a main character, a Doctor is a main character, set around a hospital (obviously because of the Doctor), one of the main characters is a journalist. There are a few other similarities that i forget at the moment. It is out over here, its been showing on Channel 4 and E4 for over a month.

The behaviour of the fighter ships in space during combat is something S:AAB, BSG borrowed from the Star Fury in B5.

Abandon All Hope ....

I just loved the Chiggy von Richthofen episodes.
