Space sim with a story ^^

Freelancer was amazing and the last pick up play space shooter that I can remember. However I long for another "tie fighter" or "x-wing alliance" these games were the absolute best in the genre. Why the space genre doesn't get the attention others have is beyond me.

Wing Commander 3 probably the most ambitious attempt to tell a story but most recently got to be X3, though you could ignore the plot if you wished.

I too long for a new Star Wars "proper" space sim, not a FPS with rail shooter section in space. Failing that, a recode of all the games from X-Wing through to Alliance to work under XP/Vista and contemporary hardware.

independence war 1 and 2 <- not very well known but good for story and graphics
haegmonia
homeworld 1/2/3
x beyond the frontier
starlancer
freelancer
Spaceforce: Rogue Universe <- i couldnt actually get into this game, the graphics looked really basic to me at the time and the mods put me off as it didnt seem there was much to them.

.... Also perhaps Darkstar One, but I've never played that so can't comment on it.

Good visually, and with some good moments, but the tasks got very repetative and it just felt like the game went on for too long. The ending was also way too easy and a bit of a let down.

Another one you could look out for is Tachyon: The Fringe. Not as complicated as many space sims and perhaps a little too easy, but an enjoyable story with two separate paths and endings.

I enjoyed playing this on my old laptop, but it doesnt like my current system. It either crashes at the start or claims I don't have the CD in the drive. Shame really.

PK!

Same here never got past the first hour. Not sure if it was because it was unoptimised or I didnt wait for a patch as it was sluggish as hell. However, I'm going to try the new Terran Conflict has I have better hardware now.

The levelling up in Darkstar One was a bit of a PITA too. As soon as you upgraded your ship with better turrets, weapons etc. the opposition just got tougher. I played through once but sold the game on after that.

While there's no story per se and it's unplayable on modern PCs, I still rate Frontier - if only rumours of David Braben making Frontier 4 were more than just hearsay.

I just checked out the freespace 2 mods and i have to say it looks FANTASTIC! im definately giving this a go when i get home :)

I had a look at Terran conflict and that too does look interesting, mainly because it continues on from how earth must have changed. This wasnt really confirmed in x2.

Yep I played through FS2 for the first time a couple of years ago using SCP and all the gfx mods and it didn't feel like an old game at all. The best thing is the control system, it's very intuitive and yet still quite deep. It also has terrific mouse input, something sadly lacking from the likes of I-War 2 and Starlancer.

Play Freespace 2

Really enjoyed Starlancer.

After reading so many positive comments about Freespace 2 here. I went and did some digging online.

Complete retail game with hi-res textures, additional campaigns can be grabbed from here:

Freespace 2 Installer

Click downloads and choose to download the .exe installer. Will also run on Linux & Mac. Untick the two tick boxes on 1st run of the installer. I took everything apart from the linux, mac executables and the single player demo.

It uses very fast mirrors, and shouldn't take too long to complete the 3.5Gbs worth of files.

Been playing it over the last couple of nights and it's fantastic.

I have I-War 2 sat on the shelf here, I have never been able to get past the first combat mission in it as I just suck so badly and the thought of having to go through all those darn cutscenes again just to get there makes me sad :(

your making a big mistake there, get it off your shelf, sit down and do it soldier, its brilliant game, i at first found the combat a bit tricky, real inertia and what not, but after some practice (instant action i highly recommend) you understand how the storm petrel works, its a damn strong ship when you learn to pilot it properly, can take out destroyers/cruisers with it one on one :D but seriously dude, played and completed I-war II a long time ago, your missing out!

Problem I had with I-War 2 was the lack of mouse support (same goes for Starlancer).

I've taken loads of flak in the past for wanting to play space sims with mouse control, but anyone who's played through Freespace 2 using mouse+keyboard will know how utterly fantastic and intuitive it can be.

lol don't waste your time with trying to get mouse in I-war II, use keyboard/stick combo, nothing compares :)
