Spanish Grand Prix 2015, Catalunya - Race 5/19

Meh, ended up staying up way to long and went to sleep, didn't wake up for practice.

Sounds like Ricciardo had engine trouble and judging from the new parts document on the FIA page (http://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula-1-world-championship/season-2015/event-timing-information-3) he didn't take a new engine. So using that first engine they suggested might be repairable, though had trouble with it. I suspect they were hoping to sneak through today and maybe FP3 on an old broken engine but would take a new one for qualifying and the race(if not fp3 also).

Anyway for that session we have, both Mclarens took a new ICE(3rd) and Button a new MGU-K(3rd).

Sauber took new ICE/MGU-H/MGU-K/Turbo(2nd on all) on both cars, new control elecs on Nasr's car only. Both Ferrari's took a new(2nd) MGU-H/MGU-K/Turbo/Control elecs(2nd on all), Vettel also taking an energy store. Manor with a new energy store as well.

So Mclaren and both Ferrari cars taking lots of new parts to start off the weekend.

Well Rosberg had a fast lap and was 3/10th's down on Vettel still but Hamilton went 4/10ths faster than Vettel. If Hamilton/Vettel laps were relatively genuine laps then maybe they are closer.

Very hard to judge the gap as Mercedes and Ferrari with the cars from last race I'd expect the gap to grow, maybe significantly, at a twisty track with less long straights. Merc is a downforce king currently much like RBR was during the last regulation period. So if the gap stayed the same as in Bahrain here, I'd probably view that as a bit of a gain in reality for Ferrari. Then again, Ferrari took even more new engine parts now while Merc are still trying to eek this car to the new engine spec, old car, will be at least some part down on power, but mostly turned down in an attempt to get 6 races out of it.

Verstappen has put in a blindingly quick lap, only 4/10th's behind Vettel, 1.1 seconds off the Merc and 7/10ths faster than Sainz. TR seem to have put together a really nice car this year and Verstappen is constantly impressive, Sainz is too but given his age and these odd really special laps and his passing moves so far, Verstappen looks to have some serious potential for the future.

Red Bull's new nose, such a disappointment, effectively the same nose but with high arches cut around the bulbous tip of the nose making the bulbous part more prominent, a little Mclaren last year like with the arches and an overall ugly as hell solution IMHO. With all the rumours of a short nose I presumed it would be a short nose in the style of Merc/Lotus :(

Also, the Mclaren finally looks awesome.... with the flowvis paint. I'll absolutely give Mclaren that going with red flowviz paint was an awesome decision.

Car and paint manage to look orange from a different angle, but still looks okay(with the flow vis paint helping).

Surely not half as awkward as both Manor-Marussias being slower than that GP2 time. And Maldonado was bloody nearly beaten by it.

I don't really count Manor if I'm honest, they would have qualified dead last on the GP2 grid today..

Its of little interest at the moment because they aren't even trying to be competitive. They are just doing the bare minimum to exist for this season. I wouldn't be surprised if their 2015 car never arrives.

Ricciardo took new ICE, MGU-H and Turbo during fp2, not too surprising to see them try and get the final bit of life out of an old engine. They don't want a penalty at Monaco because there more than anyone else it will screw them completely.

Even a 10 place penalty for opening it let alone if they need the entire engine for Monaco which would mean starting from the back and a penalty in the race though I've forgotten what it is, 10 second stop/go penalty? They wanted this 4th engine to do as little as possible here and hopefully manage to last throughout Monaco.

Not going by vettels time it isn't, Kimi 8 tenths off.

Edit: Lol they had a wrong setting on the recovery system for Kimi so hard to tell now :p
