Speaker Cable

I currently have a Sony STR-DN1050 Amp and the Onkyo surround sound speakers that were bundled with my original Onkyo amp connected by the original cables that came with that bundle (fairly certain it was this unit).

I have just purchased a set of each of Q Acoustics 2010i for the rears, 2020i for the fronts and 2000ci for the centre.

As I am going to be changing the room this is all setup in I thought it made sense to consider changing the speaker cables at this point as it should allow me to get better cable and also to get it run into place before all the furniture is in the room.

I have had a quick look and it talks about strands and AWG and other stuff and so I just do not know what to get.

I think I will want about 20-25 metres in total, 1m for the centre, 2m for each of the the fronts and about 6-8 metres for the rears (all depends on routes).

Any advise on what I should be looking for, not wanting to spend a huge amount but also not a skinflint.

You simply want something middle of the range, snake oil in spending too much. Ebay or Amazon are likely to be a good place to start.

Some people claim that your cable runs should be equal (i.e. Not a short center cable and much longer ones for the fronts) but once again that's open for debate!

Make sure you go for proper full OFC and not get duped into CCA.

I'll see if I can find the stuff I bought on Amazon, it was great budget stuff.

I bought this stuff. Seems ok for the use. There are various charts for working out the diameter of cable (remember bigger number means smaller diameter for cable). Also remember cable is cable and the low frequencies used by amps upto 20KHz have a low skin depth so more strands should in theory be better.

Edit just realised its the same stuff as the guy used above except a different colour.

Solid core oxygen free copper. If you're routing it near other cables you might want to consider something with better shielding. I ran a load of reasonably priced OFC cable for my new extension sound and it's absolutely fine (Onkyo 737 + KEF Eggs). My setup below I use QED silver anniversary. I don't think I could bring myself to spend more than £5/m unless I was making a colossal outlay on kit.

van damme is pretty dear compared to other alternatives like DCSK off amazon.

DCSK comes in 3 colours, clear, white and black.

al long as it's pure OFC your fine. CCA is what you want to avoid (copper clad aluminium).

I can see the logic behind this but realistically, would that make any kind of difference? Unless you have some stupidly long cables (50m+) mixed with some very short

I recall someone trying to do the maths and it was so insignificant an effect you'd never see the issue in practice.
