Hey guys, im looking for a build to run CAD. ive looked at the OC store but I have no idea what is compatible with what.
I've not used CAD before so I wont be making big projects any time soon.

My budget is £800 which can extend to £1000 if I have lots of ram/ very good graphics card.

I have a case with no power supply and screen, but need keyboard and mouse in budget.

CAD is quite a lose term (im a 'CAD' engineer myself).

Is there any particular programs you're using?

Is it just modeling or Rendering or simulations? Or all?

Is it for University work or 'Job' work?

Here's an example of one I have specced with a case, this is what you are looking at for an all-round CAD rig, though you may benefit from CUDA (Nvidia card) if doing a lot of rendering...

Hi,
Thanks for suggestions.
I start university in September so i'm not entirely sure what it will be used for, but I imagine that I will be creating a piece on CAD and making it a tangible object.

My case is a Thermaltake V6000 , its been in a box untouched for years waiting for a build.

From that I assumne it'll just be modeling then.

What course is it you are doing? I built a CAD rig for uni as I was doing product design, that was modeling and rendering.

As for the case, that thing is pretty old now, it should hold most of the hardware comfortably but im not sure about the cooler, as I can't find the size of the cooler. :)

Are you sure that's the case you want to use?

EDIT: As for Use in CAD modeling the CPU and RAM are most affected. In a single-threaded way, so hyperthreaded CPU's become redundant. GPU doesn't do a lot of work atall until rendering (but then only if GPU rendering is used). :)

I'm studying automotive engineering so its common to design and make a carbon fiber steering wheel for one of the cars there. How is the rig you used for uni holding up?

About the case - 2 of these were purchased around 10 years ago, 1 black, 1silver. The black one was used and worked well and the silver one just stayed in a box waiting. It may not be the ideal case, but I'll make use of what ive got...thanks for checking the sizes out, if the cooler doesn't fit ill look at some open options.

Nice, It doesn't sound like a lot of rendering will be done but I suspect some simulations. RAM is key to simulation speed..

Case wise, the only component from my spec above im worried about fitting that case is the Cooler, you get swap it for a smaller version but you won't get the benefits of being able to Overclock the CPU too much. Only if youre bothered about that (it would help performance).
Coolers under 160mm should fit though (the K2 mount doom is 165mm) so the Hyper 212,412s and Themis are good options.

Does this build feature wireless to router too? or is that a separate thing?
i'll get them on order Friday, possibly Saturday.

If i was to buy this already set up in a typical high street shop, how much would I be paying?

Sorry i missed this.

You'd need a wireless adapter too. I use a simple usb on, they are easy and cheap.

The issue with high street pc's is you may get cheap components. Normally high street pc's skimp on the case and psu.

And I can't remember ever seeing a high street pc you can overc lock either.

Not to sound like a broen-nose but OCUK's pre mades are the exception to all of those 'rules'..

It looks like the k2 will fut after all....

Just ordered all of this including the case but bar the graphics card, I've decided to check out the integrated card for the moment and will upgrade it in a few months.
Hopefully it all comes on Friday so it can be assembled in the night.

I will be needing some assistance on how to build all of this together, and some do's and don'ts of it all.

Greatly appreciated :)

Brilliant. Fair does about the card. I don't think itll be long until you get one though. :)

We are more than happy to help, Here is my quick assembly method:

1) Assemble Motherboard, CPU and RAM (outside of case)
2) Add air cooler (trust me this is much easier than doing it while in the case, attach the fan cables to the motherboard at this point too)
3) Put PSU, HDDs, ODs and SSDs in case and attach PSU cables to these and attach SATA cables (use the case tidying system).
4) Drop in your assembled motherboard and Connect PSU cables and case cables.

Simples. :)

Turns out the K2 is out of stock. Is there another cooler that is just as good/better than this for around the same price?
The hyper 212 & 412 are also out of stock.
Ive looked that themisbut not exactly sure which one was ment.
