Spec for friends

The cooler is overkill, the soundcard doesn't have an optical input an get the cheaper 2tb hdd linked earlier in the thread maybe.

No idea about the cpu, though I see you've got faster ram which it's supposed to take advantage of.

Oh, and you'd struggle to fit the cooler with that ram anyway.

Not if he's recording from an xbox.

I know for xbox he can get an adapter that he can record game sound from so he won't need a soundcard for xbox.

But for PC I am guessing you can just plug in the audio out from the motherboard into the audio in on the capture card.

I guess I thought he might need a sound card because I thought the avermedia had a digital audio slot.

On the PC he could just not bother with a capture card at all and use software capture via Fraps/Afterburner etc. They can do multi channel.

Have you guys looked at stuff from Hauppauge? I'm sure there's a cheaper solution.

He doesn't want his gameplay to lag on the PC and this card doesn't use the CPU a lot.

Get an ssd and a hdd. OS+games on the ssd, record to the hdd and you shouldn't see much if any lag.
Of course, you may want a better processor.

Then again, if he's willing to record BF3 at low settings, why the need for uber quality recording?

Where this leaves external source recording, I don't know.

As said earlier, he's best served by being patient and saving up a bit more. That way, he won't have to compromise as much, if at all and he'll be able to record higher quality footage.

Does this motherboard have an audio out headphone jack?

If so could he plug in a cable from the on-board audio to the capture card and it would it still work?
