Spec me a CCTV System

^^^
Well done!

My system is all up and running now apart from a few niggles:
I'd like to get iVMS-4200 configured properly, it sees the storage server as the pc hdd and not the nvr. Every online manual I look at is a different version to the one I've installed.

Last night one of my cameras recorded a huge amount of insect activity in our front garden, great if you're an entomologist but not if I'd set up email alerts!
I suppose setting the camera sensitivity lower might help.
edit: my wife says it's fog not insects!

Email alerts, now there's a problem. Google won't let me set up alerts because of it's double layer of security and now iCloud does the same, looks like I'll have to set up a dedicated email address.

I understand Blue Iris better now but it only seems interested in recording to the pc, at least the Hikvision NVR software records to the NVR.
Onwards and upwards.

@DXP55 - great stuff :) You might want to share with others how you did it as it could be helpful.....?

Footman - it is a bit of a learning curve but I guess we all go through it.
I never bother about email alerts for detection in an outdoor environment as there are way too many variables. Regardless of the settings and zoning etc there are no settings which compensate when it rains, snows, hailstones or just swarms with nightlife you get bombarded with emails, if you can set that up...! Although there are line settings and zone settings which could be useful, again I have not bothered. I might consider that for our rear coverage as there is no pedestrian walkway or traffic to take into consideration.
Spiders can be the worse though as they often are attracted to the IR light and start nesting just over your lens, can be kinda scary having one of those bouncing away 1cm away from your lens....!
You can set up email alerts for video loss, if someone bags a camera, or a camera failure, if it locks up or cable cut etc.

From my Android phone I use IVMS 4500 HD. It works a treat.

EDIT: As yet I have not needed direct access to the NVR remotely, apart from the Android software.

Don't forget to sort out your ports for your router as needed.

As long as you have UPNP set up on the NVR and your router is set to allow UPNP the NVR should be able to instruct the router to automatically open and forward the correct connections.

I'm still at the point where I've got the cameras, they work, but haven't managed to actually put them up yet as I've alternating between being too ill or too busy to do the wiring, although I should get the wiring for the garage camera done this weekend (it's down to about 3 foot of external wiring needing to be done and the internal wiring), at which point it's about 4 holes to be drilled.

Pro tip, if you're ever running cable in conduit with inspection hatches/panels, think about what way up you fit the corners with those access points, I had to dismantle half the conduit and repull the cable when I realised I'd put the corners on with the access facing the wrong way

Good luck on hooking them up. For me Upnp needed to be disabled in the router as it messed up with certain port forwarding that I needed and what the router reserved for itself and services.

Went out and bought a new camera from authorised Hikvision dealer - plugged it in and 30 sec it was up and running. -I took camera and he couldn't get it to work either. - So I spent 6 days flogging a dead horse.

I also had local computer man round and he spent 2 hr's and couldn't get it to work.

Next hard job is to get my money or another camera back from China. - If I don't I can put it down as a lesson learn't.

Ignore cover - need to slightly alter angle of camera so when done will cut down original cover to fit..

It's difficult enough to try and understand the technology without having to deal with faulty hardware.!

Well done on the end result though and perhaps approach the seller for a refund through Ali.?

Dxp55 - i had the same problem it was something to do with the subnet as it had a chinese firmware i had to plug it into the router direct and flash the english firmware the seller sent me

^^^^^I have read about that before. What you mustn't do is to flash the camera with any firmware other than that supplied by the seller.

I am not going to flash anything.

Had email from seller telling me to go on Skype and talk to someone - told them to stuff it I am not interested in Skype - got no one to talk to anyway.

Just looking at night footage - It reminds me of the London Fogs of 50's - Perhaps my expectations are geared to high. It is total rubbish. - supposed to be 50m range.

Oh well it was a good idea at time.

Perhaps a IR light would help -

Keep your eyes on MM

Which camera did you buy....? Can you link to the specific camera...?

Here ya go - this is place I got it from and also 7608

Also noticed fraction of second delay from me moving to picture moving (had it on desk to try it) - Also the quality of picture isn't as good as I expected - looked on menu to see what settings are but not found them yet - A lot more poking and hoping will be going on over next few days.

I could read my car number plate at 15m but even so I expected more - Perhaps it's me wanting more for my money. ?

It does give the impression of being a capable camera but whether that would meet with your expectations or not I don't know...? You know CSI isn't real...? ;)

You might want to look at some day and night samples from similar cams, Google or Youtube and you could always post a screenshot of a day and night image.
Various settings can make improvement but, as you note, addition lighting and IR lighting does help.

CSI ?????

Would you recommend a IR light - I see they range from a few quid to £50 - is it as usual you get what you pay for.

I have looked on seller sites and their night vision pictures look awesome but I bet they are different cameras from what they are advertising.

Your night pictures are what I was expecting.

Must work out how to get copy of image - Snap8 doesn't work on video monitor.

Thanks again for help and info.

ps - CSI - never watched it -

Some people have artificially raised expectations on what they should be able to achieve from a home based CCTV system after watching the likes of CSI :D

I bought myself one of these....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400631830...l?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=400631830746&_rdc=1

others have bought different IR lights.

AS noted settings can be made within the cameras menus etc which will make differences but, as always, a balance has to be made between motion blur, ghosting, grain etc and the backlight settings, exposure time, digital noise reduction etc etc etc.

Ambient light obviously makes a big difference and depends how much you need to try and compensate for poor light.

That could be it - We have no light - no street light's etc - All I could see last night was the gutter over front door due to IR and light in a window opposite - I am going to pace it today for a more accurate distance.

Now I have picture I have something to look at to set some settings.

Thanks again.

Things are moving on - China have sent me a load of passwords to try and it seems the one for my camera is 123456789abc.

In SADP it is showing as activated - I have connected the camera direct into my BT HH5

412291916.jpg

I then go to 7608 and in menu/cameras it is also showing just under D8 and is active - I have tried adding it to the list 1-8 but it says there are no more cameras allowed. - So how can I get this camera onto the numbered list.

If I connect camera to 7608 it is not found - So this is certainly a case of getting the numbers right - This is my sticking point

^^
The reason (I think) it won't see the camera could be because of the password. I'm doing this from memory as my nvr is in the loft.
If you can find a way to edit the cameras password then you must do so. The password must contain numbers and letters at least on of which must be uppercase.
This is what Hikvision call a "strong" password and only with a "strong" password will they let you proceed.

Next click on the notepad symbol on your cameras entry and go to manual rather than plug and play and enter the new password. You may (I stress may) let the camera be seen by the nvr and added to the list.

Edit: this new password should be for the NVR maybe and not the camera, try it and see.
