Spec me a CCTV System

I'm interested in some of these for work Mr Squirrel. They GM expects our current CCTV to give good facial recognition and the cameras just don't have the resolution to do so!

Would I be able to set up two of these on a NAS/micro server and get decent recording time? You say 140gb / 24 hours? If so then two camera streams should be capable of recording for at least 48 hours on a 1tb drive?

Thanks for any help

For me, they are fine for facial recognition, it does depend on the camera's focal length and distance the subject is from the camera so you need to find a sweet spot. The cameras I bought can be bought with either a 4mm, 6mm or 12mm lens, 4mm gives a wider angle but the subject would need to be closer to the camera.

You wouldn't be able to get good facial recognition at night without an IR flood light or other external lighting as others have suggested in previous posts.

Setting both cameras up to record to a NAS/micro server is ideal, that is what I'm doing, I've got a HP N54L running FreeNAS, with soon to be 4x WD RED 3TB drives, which I'll run in RAID 6 giving me around 6TB of usable space. I currently have 3 drives in RAID 5 so still have 6T useable. I use my NAS for other things as well though so only 1TB is allocated (512GB per camera) for the cameras and as I'm only recording when motion is detected, I have over a month's worth of recordings, still with space to spare from that allowance.

Are you guys using external grade cat cable to your camera's outside and if so, what brand?

I normally use blackbox stuff but a box of cat6 external is over £200. Best i've seen is just over £100 for a box on fleabay but no mention of brand but gel filled double sheathed copper cores.

I Used cat5e for my set up which works well allowed me to wire 4 cameras up video signal only and powered them locally you get get 305 meters of cat5e for £70 off some websites mine is the external grade.

You may laugh, but it really is hugely frustrating for a CCTV system to capture an incident yet be such low resolution that you can't identify anyone and even if you could it wouldn't be enough for a court to agree.

Agreed, but you wait until the day i see that black and white pixellated and fuzzy man... He can run....!:D

Would like to get some decent cameras myself... Will have a proper read through the options!

I purchased the Hikvision DS-2CD2632F-I 3MP VF IR Bullet Network Camera a week ago but could be a while before I get it going. I've a large yard 80m away which I have to lay some cat cable underground to.

I couldn't determine which lens I would need so opted for a varible focus and the option for SDcard recording for the time being was an addition.

Will be interested to see what the images are like at night off your camera system :)

Don't raid 6 four disks, a raid 1 configuration would be fair more suitable for such a small spindle count, rebuilds and overheads just aren't worth it.

What height are people mounting the cameras? Only I would have thought too high and the angles to tight too see a face with a cap, too low and its easier to foul the camera.

Anyone got a sample video that they could upload please which could show how capable these HD cameras are, along with details of both the bit-rate and resolution used....?

Thanks :)

Can anyone advise me on a decent, but cheapish night-vision camera? I need it to be able to see around 25metres at night and be USB powered.

I have a massive pest problem and I want to see what is coming into the garden at night. Just want to turn it on, let it record all night and then review the footage on my PC in the morning.

Hi, Just ordered the same camera Hikvision 3MP IP Bullet Camera - POE - DS-2CD2032-I 4mm, Can you point me in the right area for the phone app and web software please..

I have got the free software that you can download from hik vision on my laptops that allows you to view both cameras of however many you have simultaneously, you can view recordings this way too. They've also got a phone app that allows you to do the same and I actually tend to use this more than anything else.

Only issue I've found really is that the cameras produce a very noisy image at night, which can be cleaned up with that noise reduction but you lose some detail. Also due to the noise the motion activation is too sensitive at night so you record a lot of nothing.

NAS Storage

What does everyone recommend for the IP camera's ?

I looked at the QNAP TS-220 , Which seems to meet most of the requirements. Any other's ?

Thanks for that :)

Whilst it is indeed useful to see it would be great to see some night footage etc from those who have them installed. The one linked seems to use the SDI connection, rather than std POE Ethernet type.

Sorry mate I misunderstood your post.

HERE is a good review of the dome version of my camera which convinced me to purchase it. The night vision looks very impressive.

Have you managed to get yours up and running then?

I've been looking at getting a couple of Hikvisions for a while now but I'm still trying to visualise how I will install them.

Have you drilled the 1" hole and fed all of the cables internally or stripped down the cable for a neater installation?
