Spec me a dash cam

My mother's birthdays coming up and as she works for the police she encourages these but claims its one of those "I'll get round to it" jobs that takes you years to get around to!

So me and my sister have decided to buy her one for her birthday, which she's happy about.

Looking to spend around £80 I think, ideally we want one that will loop record, one that can be plugged into a 12v connector or if there's a better way to power it then we would be up for that, basically want ease and convenience of use for her.

Get one of this 0803 ones, they're cheap as chips and just work.

I actually don't use one anymore as i got questioned by the police about mine... moral of the story is they're grand recording on the public roads but be very careful what your companies policies are wherever you work with photography and recording equipment when in their car park... not an experience im keen to revisit.

I've just bought an SJcam SJ4000 WiFi with the car cradle and spare battery for £74. It has a great picture and 170degree wide angle according to reviews. The downside I guess is that its not so discreet on the dash. I will have to see when it turns up.
 
The 0805 is out now and isn't that much more than the 0803. I don't know what E-Prance have improved on the 0805, but I guess it's a no brainer to go for the 0805.
 
I'd worry about using an SJ4000 in any remotely dodgy areas as it's a clone of the gopro which are worth serious money and well worth smashing a window for.
 
Blackvue range is awesome. Its a much higher quality product and several generations in.
I have a DR3500 fhd model. Very clean install, reliable and provides great footage. Has saved me from problems on 2 occasions now.

I have the original mini 0801 with GPS mount, it has been great, only thing i had to do was buy a right handed connector for the GPS mount .., E-Prance seem's to be the source for all the mini variant's have a look for Techmoan on youtube for samples

Youtube seems to reduce the quality a tad, but still shows mostly what it can do.
I also like the position sensors and the accompanying software that allows you to see the time-line and forces acting on the car at any one time.
This model also has an option to add GPS with an external antenna.
 
after two crashes neither my fault i thought about buying one of these do people leave them permanently fixed , wired up ? my only concern in doing that is some scroat smashing the window to rob it. and can they record when car is just parked up?.
 
I wired mine in properly, having all the wires hanging out would drive me nuts, so I powered it from the overhead lights/sunroof power supply.
Different cameras have different options.
The Blackvue has a parking mode, and can be made to work of a perm live, and will record when there is movement.
I don't use the parking mode, and only have it come on with an ignition live on my Jag.
Don't think I have ever heard of anyone nicking one from a car? If you install it discretely enough, no one will ever notice without a close inspection. On mine, you can only really see it from the outside if you take a close look.

I use a Mobius cam in mine. You can set them up to work as a dash cam and the place I got mine throws in a mount and car charger. The image quality is also better than others I've tried and it's better built. Cost me £60 :)
