My original 1TB harddrive died and now my other one is on the way out, it's making a horrible squeaking noise.

So gonna get a bigger harddrive and partition but not sure what to go for.

I want to spend as little as possible but something of quality.

Cheers

Is this going to be your boot drive, or just used for storage? The WD black/green drives are worth considering too.

You may have just been unlucky with having 2 disks failing, or it could be something systematic causing the failures such as overheating. Worth checking before you put a new one in.

Storage.

I'm pretty sure the 1Tb one broke because I kind of dropped my pc on it's front (where the harddrive sits)

The other one is at least 10 years old, so I think it's time!

I don't think it's overheating, I've got a intake fan blowing through the harddrives on my zalman z9 plus

Western Digital is the best choice in my opinion.

For speed and a great 5 year warranty either of these.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD4003FZEX) HDD £209.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD3003FZEX) HDD £167.99
Total : £387.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

For storage, low heat/noise and a great 3 warranty either of these.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Western Digital Caviar Red 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD40EFRX - OEM HDD £161.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Red 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD30EFRX - OEM HDD £119.99

I can understand Black drives for their warranty, but their speed? Usually those sized drives are going to be storing media, where speed isn't an issue.

Not really, media storage is better suited for Red drives.

A black drive is currently a perfect solution for Steam in my opinion, with the new revision boasting 170mb/s read and write speeds which will offer great performance.

As the OP didn't stipulate what the use of the drive was for i was giving the best option for each scenario.

Well, I have 2 of their sshd's they both are long after warranty period, no failures at all.
Depends how your system looks like. If its clean and well ventilated, disk will survive long, like mine.

I am not saying there aren't Seagate drives out there that last, what I am saying is that Seagate have the highest failure rate and by some margin.

Bold statement to make. Disks fail, Seagate seem to fail more.

+1

Go WD.. MUCH more reliable than Seagate.

I work at a huge data centre and although it might not be a fair statistic for some reason, as far as faulty hard drives go Seagates are easily in first place numbers wise.

EDIT - just logged the 4767th and 4768th faulty hard drive on the current system we have. Both Seagate.

How would you rate Toshiba harddrives? If you were to buy a brand of harddrive based on the failure rate at the data centre, which would it be?
