to get mpg like that, surely youre doing lots of short trips.

if so, not many cars will get fantastic mpg when limited to short trips Mossey

I thrashed the Astra VXR to within an inch of its life at rockingham on the VXR Track Days. Literally nothing other than full throttle or brakes for about 30 minutes. I averaged 13mpg.

If you can only manage 12mpg on the roads there HAS to be something wrong with your car.

I know the STs are thirsty but that seems silly, try the ECU reset trick or wedge a hardback under the throttle pedal.

If you're set on changing because you've had other problems, what sort of thing are you after - do you want a hot hatch or are you happy to look at less practical things.

330ci is the default suggestion around here but it does fit the bill, or howabout a Mondeo ST220? No turbo so a simpler engine, good value too. Golf GTi might be worth a look too

I am so close to petitioning a new rule saying 'Please justify ALL car recommendations or go away' because this sort of stuff is getting tedious. The OP is not going to buy an £80,000 V8 BMW.

No worries, antipacker now has enough posts for the MM. We won't be hearing from him again.

Sorry but you're wrong.

The ECU on the ST's do learn your driving style. You will need to reset this and give it another month to see if it changes. However, it could be that you're doing lots of smaller trips and driving quite reasonably rapid. This would obviously decrease your mpg, I really don't believe there is anything physically wrong with your car just from you giving us an MPG figure. What other problems have you had?

MrLOL the ST is a very thirsty car, I used to do a fair few shorter journeys in mine when I had it, and used to get around 200miles out of a tank, I used to average just over 23mpg (or so) on a motorway. I think my average was around 19-20mpg (baring in mind I did a lot of smaller trips, as I live close to work).

Agreed the ST is a very thirsty car. Sometimes I think it really is too thirsty for the performance on offer BUT I do love it :).
With mine chipped with dreamscience and running race plus 18-19mpg is the average urban mpg. That does include the odd full throttle charge but also more sedate driving too.
Fords official urban mpg is around 20 so 18-19 aint so bad really .
When you reset the ecu how did you do it ?
I am told The best way is to disconnect the battery negative terminal for 15-20 mins and also touch it to ground to expel any residual charge.
If after an ecu reset its still only returning low teens mpg ask your local fraud dealer to make sure the latest ecu software is reinstalled, you never know ?????

That's how I've been told to reset the ECU too.

However, I never had much need to reset the ECU, I owned the car from new, so it was already adapted to my heavy right foot :D.

yes but we're talking averages of 19 mpg.

To be AVERAGING 12mpg, there has to be something not quite right with it. Maybe than the ECU reset does the trick, but 12mpg average isnt normal unless your driving around with your pants on fire and risk being imprisoned at every corner.

I can quite belive it. I've got a Kuga with a detuned Focus ST engine. On a town commute stop/start driving it averages 14-15mpg. If you get to more normal type roads its up to 20-21 and on the motorway about 27-28. If you do stop/start driving that sounds right. When I had my 350z I was getting around 10-13 at the very best on a short commute. With a 2.2 mondeo diesel around 28mpg. A 2.0 petrol focus got about 25mpg.

Stop/Start commutes = throw the mpg rulebook about the windows. Whats your average speed on your driving? Are you never getting out of 3rd gear etc. It all depends on your journey type I guess.

I had a ST with a fuel card, and I never got it as low as 12mpg, there is definately something wrong with that, lowest I got mine was around 18-19, normally 23-24 round town and 28 on a run, I did go through a phase of getting 30 plus, but that was when i was doing driving on a speed restricted stretch on the motorway for a mst of my journeys.
