Spec me a suitcase for hold luggage

I think that luggage has got to lax (in weight and size).

Idiots who have huge carry on bags (basically taking the pee) I have no time for at all. I genuinely hope they get charged to the max/turned away!

Ever been on a flight with hefty turbulence or a heavy landing and overhead lockers drop open and spill out? Heaven forbid if there was a real situation.

Personally, I would never skimp on luggage, seeing those carousal cases that are bust wide open etc. Personally I would invest in a renowned brand. I own a Samsonite that looks like its been through a warzone, but (touch wood) always held firm and its 20 years old!

and get a matching belt......................

Having worked in travel, and subsequently travelled for a living, I've seen countless destroyed luggage incidents, and had plenty of suitcases damaged.

I'm really tight, watertight at times, but I bought a Samsonite and haven't had an issue since.

I have a slightly larger version of this:

Not Gucci, but I have a Versace carry on case...I got it really cheap, again from TK Maxx. I like it because it's quite deep and light, and can hold iPad or small laptop on the front. But it offers only minor protection and not one to get checked in.

Either get a Peli Case 1650 (or bigger), or failing that use a large brown cardboard box and cover it up with brown parcel tape. Make sure to pack another roll of parcel tape if you are coming back with it, and should it get damaged a new one will either be free or a few quid. ;)

Key question - how often will you use the luggage in it's lifetime. If it's only a few trips then a cheap one will be fine. If you are going to use it regularly then I'd suggest a Samsonite as it won't fall apart and is lighter so you can fit more items in it.

I bought a few Samsonite cases in Orlando a good few years ago, still working fine and one of the was used weekly when I was flying for work all the time. It's not how far it travels that matters, it's how many times it gets loaded in and out of a plane. My trusted Samsonite must have done hundreds of flights, it obviously shows sign of use but still works as intended.

There is a bit of Terry Pratchet here though - suit cases will get used lots over your life. If you can invest in a Samsonsite I'd do it... I have 3 junkers in the shed that I need to send to landfill because I didn't do it right first time.
