considering a ridge style wallet. after watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmjtPnKzE5A (a ridge 'promotor/youtube guy of sorts) he actually seems a little deflated that the 12$ clone is pretty much as good as the $150 ridge. lol.
Anyway I tried out a couple of ridge clones recently. Sent them back same day they arrived. This is what I found :
1. When you stack your cards (in my case 7) the raised text really affects the niceness of the stack. leaves gaps and creates a wobble effect. Even if you carefully adjust so facing text is offset the 7th card caused a problem. a lot of youtubers use clean unembossed cards....
2. Shaking the wallet pretty fiercely, the cards flew out . Dropping it in just the right way also caused the cards to move out . It would be possible to have a card come loose and get lost. maybe not likely, but possible.
3. Next issue was the whole 'fan thing' So you press the cards, then fan by squeezing the back. Wow great if you want a game of 7 card pickup from across the room. This seems to be mitigated by having only 5 cards or fewer or making sure the cards are half way or over before squeezing. see next point.
4. You kinds have to handle/ move / take out all cards from their resting position to get a card, even a little bit. It's pfaffy and fiddly. This is not good since it increases risk of accident. contrast to a normal leather wallet you just take the card out you want.
5. it's really just a bit of elastic and a couple of bits of metal. Ridge sure do go in for the marketing of their 'premium' materials but guys, come on it's BS, really isn't it. It's still knicker elastic and some screws.
6. I mean, screws! who wants to have to tighten and 'maintain' your wallet. They ship a screwdriver as well. It's gimmicky Not impressed.
7. accepting all the above, I admit the size was impressive. (but my leather card wallet is the same thickness...)
8. When I have my cards in my wallet, I can if need be now and again, put a key in it, put a receipt, put a small screw, sd card, ticket for a venue etc... not so easy with this card holder.
The other thing after I load my cards up I only use a few cards about 2/3 rest are now and again. It really makes you think do I need to carry about all these cards? Each card significantly adds to the size of the thing. My leather wallet is about the same size whether I have all my cards in or not, so I don't feel burdened by carrying a lesser used card.
9. This would probably be really good for someone who needs to carry 1 or 2 cards about, and maybe a note or 2 on a night out.
10. as for me, I sent them back not for me. I like the idea but the practicalities were dubious.
Anyone else got a ridge / clone/ thoughts ?
