spec me a washing machine

Bought an LG 1681TD about a month ago, upgraded from a 9 year old Hotpoint which had an off centre drum. Moved it too many times without the bolts in the back.

Anyway can't fault the new machine yet it's quiet, dry clothes better and washes as you'd expect. Bought mine from appliances online, ordered saturday morning and was delivered on sunday morning at just before 9am.

I think the LG 1481td or the 1281td should come under your budget.

We've got a Samsung washing machine - had it going on for 3 years (3-4 washes a week) and hasn't caused a problem yet.

I don't mean to be rude to you Andrew (that's a phrase that means I'm going to go ahead and be rude anyway), but it does annoy me slightly when someone says something about a product they've owned, as if their sample size of 1 can give any information on reliability. It happens all the time with hard drives too.

What we can provide is information on how well it washes, if it's quiet, perhaps even for those of you with metered water how efficient it is, and we can talk about how good it looks, or how well the gloss surfaces clean up, and how easy it is to use.

But anything on reliability, based entirely on our experience with one for a few years is useless at best.

You can say that about 99% of the posts on any forum, by their very nature forums have selective users and a limited demographic.

I forgot to add:

The washing machine runs on air and plays music according to one's mood. Don't get that with a Miele.

Yes, you certainly can say that. You'd be wrong of course, but you could certainly say it.

Edit : Actually I don't think you understood my point at all. Your opinion is of use, or it at least might be of use. However with a sample size of 1, then you can derive nothing about reliability.

I did say that. No question about can or could.

I wasn't commenting on Samsung's overall washing machine reliability, I was just giving my experience of the one that's currently chillin' in my kitchen.

Calling Dimple, calling Dimple!

Sir, you have a call on line 2.

I wouldn't bother TBH, he posted in another spec a washing machine thread a while ago he wouldn't post any comments in these type of threads anymore.

& as for my recommendations (bosch etc.) you get what you pay for, the cheap Bosch stuff is not quality, its an OEM made machine with a Bosch name on it, only the stuff around the £5-600 mark is made by them these days. :p

I may no longer be a Washing machine salesman anymore (11 years ago) but I like to 'keep my hand in' :D

I'd look for a GERMAN made machine, Siemens (part of the Bosch group) seem to make this a big selling point about their models. I spoke to a Bosch engineer a few months ago & we had a lengthy discussion about domestic appliances over a cuppa & he more or less agreed about this. :o

I think Dimple said as much as what Grimley has said, the new information being that Siemens don't badge up stuff they didn't make. I do think Dimple said that Bosch are careful with quality on the stuff they badge, unlike the [I can't remember the name] group who make a lot of the lower end stuff.

I repair domestic appliances, some of what you have said is wrong, the cheaper Bosch kit is just made in Poland, it is not a badged product at all.

I would always recommend an LG Direct Drive washing machine before anything else.

Why the direct drive, and what's special about it? I'm asking purely out of interest now.

There are no belts or carbon brushes, the motor is incredibly reliable as is the machine itself. They are also incredibly quiet compared to a machine with a belt and traditional motor.

We have five of them at the Crewe Alexandra training ground and in the 7 years they have been in use the only repair has been to replace a door on one machine.

I'm here

My thread keyword alerts didn't work :(

I'm not getting drawn in but listen to a bloke who repairs these things all day and knows what breaks down more than most - Oldcoals.

While the thread is active....

Is there anything I can do to combat a slight smell from my dishwasher? Normally I open it when it beeps at me, last night I didn't until this morning and it didn't smell totally clean this morning. It's not stinking or anything. I normally run it at the 65 setting. Should I be doing anything to get it smelling fresh again? It's only 9 months old, a Bosch integrated one, and it's completely clean and shining inside. I've taken out the wee filter thing at the bottom which had no debris in it.

One of my colleagues thought he would fix a similar problem with the work dishwasher by filling a cup with washing up liquid and turning the machine on.

Welp.

Haha! :)

I'm thinking a bit of bleach. Bleach is my proverbial hammer, and everything is a nail.
