Hi all,

We live out of town surrounded by quite a large area of open land. We have live stock (mainly poultry), and even though we are careful with the waste feed, there a quite a few rats + mice around. I'm looking for an air-rifle to get rid of the ones traps & poison miss.

I'm pretty clueless about air-rifles so looking for any advice or recommendations on a good make/brand to get.

Thanks,

Are you looking to buy 2nd hand or new? Even 2nd hand i think you may have to stretch your budget a little to get something half decent.

Also what kind of range will you be shooting at?

Have you considered getting intouch with any local airgunners to see if they would be willing to help out free of charge? People are always looking for land to shoot on.

As said above you would be better off increasing your budget slightly. I'd recommend a weihrauch HW95 or a BSA Lightning in .177 with a 3-9X40 scope.

You will have to go to a gun shop anyway as the UK law has changed. When you go have a play with a few and see which feels the best.

Would echo the budget increase as you're not going to get anything half decent for under £100 plus a scope too.

Something like the HW95 while a good pick is over double your £90 estimate so you have to really think what you want!

Yeah i was thinking secondhand but thinking about it they hold their price well so would still be a fair bit over budget.

If you really cant go much higher then your best bet would be a cometa 300 and smaller scope.

I started off with a cometa 300 and its a pretty decent first airgun. Shoots accurate when used with some decent pellets. The trigger is a world apart from the likes of HW though.

For around 110-130 you can pick up a Ratcatcher which is made by Crossman, Co2 canister rifle, around 9/10lb trigger, for a budget less than 100 i suggest looking at SMK rifles.

Nice price for that rifle - I bought the HW100 S brand new before the ban on mail order purchases came into effect last year for around the £630 mark if I remember correctly - now the same rifle is ~ £700 :o

There will be plenty of rifles to suit your needs though as Tom0 suggested you can always get a C02 rifle to for something on the cheaper side.

Ive just had a quick look on there and 95s are going for 150-180 plus scope hes looking at £200 or more.

I cant believe how much airguns have gone up in price after having a quick look . I haven't looked into them for a few years now as i lost interest.

I want to get hold of a Webley Sidewinder in .177 but it could prove hard/costly now with Venom out of business :(.

The only problem with the ratcatcher is winter is coming so it will be pretty underpowered after a few shots i'd have thought?

I know my co2 berettas are crap in the cold, although sayin that they're always pretty crap lol.

You don't need a really powerful rifle to kill a mouse/rat and it won't be worth buying a CO2 rifle with a budget of £90.

My brother has a BSA SuperSport air rifle (around £170 new now I believe) and it's pretty powerful - plently of power to kill a rabbit, let alone a mouse. You could probably find one second hand for around £100.
It's very light too and get's excellent reviews; http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews2197.html

The HW77 is a nice bit of kit - my mates got one and it's a nice single shot rifle to use. Looking at the pics the seller has up - what kind of treatment is it that you need apply to get a nice finish like in this picture.

My HW100 S is in need of a nice finish - as nice as the Walnut stock is it won't stay that way forever!

I've just spent the last 3 hours walking around the island with my Webley Scott Xocet - cracking rifle!
Got 14 rats, 3 rabbits and accidently got a partrige

Crickey thats nice, been shooting with shotguns for over 12 years now and have never had an opportunity to shoot partridge.
