Spec Me An Air Rifle:

I live on a private Estate, the owners have shoots every winter - the island has 1,200 pheasants on, 700 partriges and 700 woodcock.

we're not allowed to shoot them though.
I thought it was a rat.

Will be quite a tasty rat:D. Although this reminds me of one of my first shooting trips, fired at what i thought was a hen pheasant through some tree's, only for my dog to come back with a dead barn owl in his mouth:o

Looking at the pics the seller has up - what kind of treatment is it that you need apply to get a nice finish like in this picture.

My HW100 S is in need of a nice finish - as nice as the Walnut stock is it won't stay that way forever!

From that picture I'm pretty certain its a beech stock and will more than likely be the stock varnish finish. The varnish HW apply to the stock is a matt/ satin finish when new but after lots of use it goes shiny like in that picture.

Oil finishes are used on walnut stocks and do look really nice but take a while to do. You also have to re-oil it once a month for a year and then once a year for ever to keep the finish topped up.

The oil soaks into the timber and protects the timber from beneath the surface.

Pretty easy to do, there are guides knocking about on the net i believe. I oiled my old walnut venom sidewinder and it looked amazing.

I would recommend the classifieds and look second hand just make sure you test before you buy. To make sure it works of course and that you feel comfortable using it I have a Webley Omega had it for years and like it a lot but my friends find it hard to use because its very heavy for them.

the for sale section on airgunbbs is great for secondhand airguns

i picked up a modified crossman 2240 (ratbuster) on this site

nice piece of kit and great for vermin at short range

Deep necro, but my question is the same as the OP. Looking for an air rifle for ratting around the farm. Budget around £500, thinking of a .177, PCP, some kind of magazine feed, and scope. Any recommendations, especially for the scope?

A brief bit of research suggests something like a BSA Scorpion SE?

For ratting I'd go .22, I'd go springer, I find mine super reliable and accurate while my dad's PCP gives more shots before having to move (re-**** [damn swear filter, word for a male chicken, more accurate than re-load as he just opens and closes the bolt to turn his mag 1 shot and re-set the gas chamber]), but it's not like the rats will hang around after the first shot anyway and his has nothing but aggro (unless you have easy access to the scuba tanks/certificates for them or a pump). As for scopes, something with a large diameter lens so that the little ****s hiding in the shadows can be seen easily. Magnification, I have a x4-12, but rarely go above 6 as it's plenty tight enough to aim and I find it easier to get on a snap-shot target quicker

Get an Air Arms S400 Carbine if you can stretch your budget abit.

Problem is air rifles have doubled in price since i was into it about 13 years ago, and the pellets by about 400%

I have a crosman 2250 rat catcher.
I also have a Weihrauch 99S

There’s no comparison between the two similarly priced rifles.
The Weihrauch is night and day a better rifle.

Absolutely loved my S400, had the classic though for the extra shots. Really good value rifle.

I’m looking to buy a new house which has a rabbit problem in the grounds. No near neighbours. What sort of air rifle would I need to safely dispatch them? I’m intending to eat what I kill where appropriate.

What would I need air rifle wise? Not shot a rifle since the cadets so plenty of practice required before I try an rabbits I’m not keen on wounding anything.
Any advice gratefully received.

Worth keeping in mind that poultry will ingest lead pellets thinking they are stones, so might want to try and avoid a lot of pellets ending up in a small area. Chickens will tolerate lead levels a lot better than ducks, but not ideal for either.

Love how many think it's easy to just but a rifle and go out shooting animals. You'll need so much practice to get reliable and skilled enough. Unless of course your planning on hiting them over the head with the rifle.

For new shooters definitely .177 over .22.

I've never used PCP rifles, wondering if my bike track pump, good to 160psi would be suitable to start with? That's less than the rifles can take but does that just translate into fewer shots?

Edit, oops mis-read bar and psi, the guns need far higher pressure!
